Reporting directly to a Lieutenant or Commander, responsible for providing pre-hospital clinical medicine in response to 911 calls. Operates and maintains medical equipment and emergency vehicles.

Advanced EMT to receive monthly stipend once credentialed at AEMT level.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  • Provides pre-hospital care based on Scope of Care
  • Operates standard equipment; such as stretchers, patient care monitors and diagnostic equipment
  • Operates Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicles under normal and emergency situations
  • Assures vehicles are adequately stocked and in proper working order
  • Maintains and troubleshoots medical equipment
  • Assess emergency scenes and gives direction to patients, first responders, and/or bystanders
  • Utilizes electronic communication including portable and mobile radios, electronic patient care records, and computer aid dispatching equipment
  • Extricates persons from vehicles, bends and lifts, and performs CPR for extended periods of time
  • Functions independently once credentialed by the Medical Director
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas
  • Maintains credentialing by the Medical Director
  • Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position involves safely operating a motor vehicle and emergency equipment under normal and emergency conditions without any equipment modifications specific to any individual operator
  • Position involves prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, lifting, climbing, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities
  • Position involves accessing patients on foot over rough terrain and obstacles
  • Position involves hearing audible sounds and speaking in a clear, understandable voice
  • Position involves extricating persons from vehicles
  • Position involves partner to carrying equipment and patients weighing up to 225 pounds
  • Physical Abilities
    • Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions
  • Fine Motor Skills
    • Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques, such as bandaging, splinting, and other basic airway techniques
  • Vision
    • Must have correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles
    • Must have color acuity adequate for determination of skin and blood color
    • Must be able to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes
  • Hearing
    • Must be able to hear and understand information provided by patients, family, or bystanders
    • Must be able to hear breath sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressures
    • Must be able to differentiate separate conversations in active distracting environments
    • Must be able to hear and understand radio traffic when responding with lights and sirens
  • Speech
    • Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions
    • Must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations
    • Must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families, and other emergency personnel
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • May be required to work in inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold and wet conditions
  • High-volume, fast-paced environment dealing with life-threatening situations
  • Constant contact with the public under duress and in crisis situations

IRREGULAR HOURS

  • Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) is required
  • Essential personnel for emergency situations; discretion of department director
  • Regular attendance is required

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of EMS operations, systems, and procedures

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required

  • Certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services as an EMT-B or AEMT

Required Within Thirty (30) Days Of Employment

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience as a 911 EMT-B or AEMT
  • Bilingual: Spanish

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance;
  • Refusing to submit to a test to determine alcohol or controlled substance concentration
  • Leaving scene of crash
  • Vehicular manslaughter/homicide
  • Using vehicle to commit a felony;
  • Losing your license or driving while license is suspended;
  • Two or more reckless driving violations, negligent crash or violation with a pedestrian;
  • Three or more violations while operating a motor vehicle
