Job summary

University Hospital in Newark, NJ, is seeking an Emergency Medical Services Communications Supervisor to ensure orderly EMS operations, provide online supervision, and lead EMS personnel. The role emphasizes leadership, performance evaluation, and delivering exceptional patient care across diverse populations.

The position requires extensive EMS experience, 9-1-1 dispatching, EMS driving, and NJ credentials, with additional certifications and bilingual skills preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum four (4) years of EMS experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of EMS dispatching experience in a 9-1-1 call center.
  • Minimum two (2) years of EMS vehicle driving experience with a good driving record.
  • Valid driver's license with New Jersey driving privileges.
  • Must be able to pass a medical evaluation and respirator fit test.
  • Must be able to wear an N95 particulate filter respirator mask in accordance with PEOSHA standards as a condition of employment.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain current and active credentials in good standing (EMT, Paramedic, or Mobile Intensive Care Nurse, as applicable).

  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance to EMS personnel.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and patient care to individuals of all ages and diverse populations using age-appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Identify and perform additional duties as needed to support efficient EMS operations.
  • Promote a positive, professional image of University Hospital and the EMS Department.
  • Ensure customer and patient expectations are consistently met or exceeded.

  • Must possess and maintain current and active credentials in good standing (EMT, Paramedic, or Mobile Intensive Care Nurse, as applicable), subject to initial and periodic Primary Source Verification.
Required Certifications & Credentials
  • Certification as a New Jersey Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or EMT certification in NJ, PA, NY, DE, MD, VA, WV, Washington, D.C., or another Atlantic EMS Council member state. NJ EMT reciprocity must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.

OR

  • Certification as a New Jersey Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic (MICP) or Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN).
  • Certification in the Basic Telecommunicator Course (BTC).
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD).
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
  • For MICP or MICN candidates:
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider certification.
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider certification or Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Professionals - Advanced (PEPP-A) Provider certification.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) Level 200 certification.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) Level 300 certification. Candidates not possessing this credential at the time of hire or promotion must obtain it within their first year in the position.
Required Training
  • EMS Hazmat Awareness and Operations Level.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Awareness.
  • National Response Plan: An Introduction.

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly range for this position is WH/23C ;$32.27- $49.35 per hour. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs. The expected salary range for this position is in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
