Job summary

Chippenham Hospital is seeking an EMS Nurse Coordinator to provide a consistent, courteous care experience for patients transported by EMS. You will greet EMS personnel, assist with offload planning, collaborate with the CNC, and ensure timely EMS surges and bed placement.

You’ll also supervise the EMS lounge, stroke area, and support downtime duties. The role requires an RN license (VA or compact), ACLS/BLS, PALS within the stated timelines, and at least 3 years of ED experience.

Job Summary And Qualifications

The EMS Nurse Coordinator is responsible for providing a consistent, courteous, and timely care experience for patients transported by EMS to our facility. The responsibilities include greeting and recepting both the patient and EMS personnel in a dedicated area. The EMS Nurse Coordinator collaborates with the clinical nurse coordinator (CNC) to adequately plan for the arrival of inbound patients and manage through any EMS surges to achieve timely offloads. When not actively offloading EMS patients, the EMS Nurse Coordinator is also responsible for overseeing the EMS lounge, maintaining the stroke care area, assisting clinical personnel in the care of patients, and other downtime duties. The EMS Nurse Coordinator will collaborate and communicate regularly with the EMS PPR Director on strategic initiatives and provide ideas/feedback to the EMS Growth Governance Council. The EMS Nurse Coordinator shall remain dedicated to this role and shall not be removed from this role to assume primary care of patients admitted to the ED.

Offload Process

• When call comes in, along w/CNC, determine bed placement before arrival.
• Be visible and present in the dedicated EMS offload area.
• Greet patient.
• Greet medics by name.
• Receive EMS hand-off. Prioritize “EMS Time Out” protocol (EMS delivers report, we listen).
• Immediately identify any critical patients.
• Offload patient to planned treatment space.
• Recept patient and perform team triage.

Surge Process

• If no bed placement available, utilize the dedicated EMS Surge Beds (4 minimum).
• If all EMS beds occupied, assume temporary care of those patients.
• Collaborate with CNC to prioritize placement and assign ED nurse to assume primary care of these patients.
• EMS Relationship Building.

Downtime Duties

• Maintain Stroke Care Area.
• IV stroke/start kit.
• Timer.
• Weighted Stretcher.
• Stroke Stickers.
• Transport Monitor.
• Tele-monitors Primary/Secondary.
• EMS Lounge Supervision.
• Ensure that items are readily stocked in refrigerators (work with FANS).
• Check that digital display boards are functional, information is up to date and relevant.
• General housekeeping (clean, tidy appearance).
• Assistant Flow Coordinator.
• EDMV.
• Teletracker.
• Monitor EMS Volume.
• Quarterly EMS Ride Along.
• EMS Recognition.
• Escalate names of medics that should be recognized by leadership.
• Share “Great Save” stories with leadership that can be highlighted.
• Participate in Annual EMS Week Celebrations, encourage participation for EMS Survey.
• Professional Development.
• Collaborate with facility educators, clinical subject matter experts, and EMS to coordinator interdisciplinary educational opportunities.
• EMS Feedback.
• Work with PPR EMS Director on providing timely quality outcomes to medics as requested/needed.

What qualifications you will need

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
• Current RN VA license or has a compact multistate license.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 6 months of employment start date.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
• PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support must be obtained within 6 months of employment start date.
• Required 3 year of emergency room experience.
