Job summary

Volunteers of America–Greater New York is seeking an Employment & Education Specialist to support young adults in securing work readiness and educational advancement through the Transitional Living Program in Union, NJ.

You will guide high school completion, GED, college or trade school enrollment, and create job readiness workshops, while building links with local employers to expand internships and opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree with one year of related experience in providing employment/education services for low-income and/or homeless populations.
  • Knowledge of federal guidelines for public and private low-income housing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid state driver’s license with a safe driving record that meets agency policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide young adults with weekly one-on-one support to complete their high school or GED certificate, including assisting youth with re-enrolling in high school or a GED program.
  • Assist young adults in identifying and enrolling in postsecondary education or trade school, helping with course selection and accessing financial aid.
  • Assist young adults in setting up academic tutoring if necessary; facilitate education assessments and workshops.
  • Facilitate employment workshops focused on job training and retention, goal setting, resume/cover letter development, and work readiness skills.
  • Develop relationships with local businesses and employment service agencies to facilitate internships and jobs that improve youth’s long-term economic security.

Position: Employment & Education Specialist

The Employment & Education Specialist ensures that the young adult has the work readiness skills to begin seeking employment or furthering their education to become financially self‑sufficient and live independently upon program completion. The Transitional Living Program assists youth in preparing for life as adults. Our staff teach and prepare youth in areas such as job preparation, navigating housing options, and financial literacy to manage paychecks, bills, and savings.
