Job summary

The Benefits Administration & Retirement Operations Intern at Xcel Energy in Minneapolis provides hands-on experience supporting retirement and health & welfare benefit programs. Qualifications

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher.
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or Management.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours/week) and commute in-person per hybrid policy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with benefit administration activities by reviewing transactions, researching discrepancies, and helping maintain participant records across multiple systems.
  • Perform weekly and monthly reporting, data validation, and operational tracking for retirement and benefits programs.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to support retirement, health and welfare, and deferred compensation administration processes.
  • Assist with payroll, trust, and funding reconciliation activities and help identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Document business processes and support special projects related to benefits operations, compliance, and participant experience.

The Benefits Administration & Retirement Operations Intern will join Xcel Energies Benefits team and gain hands-on experience supporting retirement and health & welfare benefit programs. Working alongside experienced benefits professionals, the intern will assist with retirement processing, benefits administration, reporting, vendor coordination, and operational data reviews. This role provides exposure to systems such as Workday, SAP, and other benefit administration platforms while helping ensure accurate and timely delivery of benefits to employees, retirees, and beneficiaries. The position is based in Minneapolis, MN, and offers valuable experience in HR operations, benefits administration, retirement programs, process improvement, and data analysis.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Assist with benefit administration activities by reviewing transactions, researching discrepancies, and helping maintain accurate participant records across multiple systems.
  • Perform weekly and monthly reporting, data validation, and operational tracking for retirement and benefits programs.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to support retirement, health and welfare, and deferred compensation administration processes.
  • Assist with payroll, trust, and funding reconciliation activities and help identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Document business processes and support special projects related to benefits operations, compliance, and participant experience.

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energies business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Interest in employee benefits, retirement plans, HR operations, finance, and compliance.
  • Experience using Excel functions, PivotTables, or data analysis tools.
  • Experience working with large datasets or reports.
  • Demonstrated process improvement or project experience through coursework, internships, or campus organizations.
  • Detail-oriented Comfortable with data and spreadsheets Able to follow processes Curiosity and critical thinking

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $16.60 to $19.50 per hour
