Job summary

SkyPilot is building its commercial cloud platform in San Mateo, CA, expanding its engineering team to support multicloud AI workloads. We seek an experienced Software Engineer to design and build the platform from the ground up, delivering scalable, multitenant infrastructure across cloud providers.

You will implement core services, RBAC, and production-grade APIs using Go and cloud-native tech, with a focus on reliability, security, and scalability in a venture-backed startup.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience in backend or platform engineering.
• Experience building a SaaS platform from zero to one, preferably in an early-stage startup.
• Experience building the platform layer of a multitenant SaaS or cloud product, including RBAC, API gateways, or billing.
• Production experience with Kubernetes.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer specializing in cloud platforms to help design and build SkyPilot's commercial cloud platform from the ground up.

In this role, you will develop the core infrastructure and services that power a scalable, secure, and reliable multitenant cloud platform. You'll work on foundational architecture, cloud-native services, and platform components that enable customers to run AI workloads across multiple cloud providers.

This position is ideal for an engineer who has built SaaS or cloud platforms from zero to one in a venture-backed startup and enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges with a strong focus on production reliability and scalability.

• Architect and develop the commercial cloud platform from the ground up.

• Develop production-grade APIs and backend services using Go and other cloud-native technologies.
• Build and maintain Kubernetes-based infrastructure for reliable, scalable platform operations.
• Design and implement service communication and integrations using gRPC.
• Develop and manage infrastructure using Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Work with PostgreSQL to support platform data management and application requirements.
• Implement monitoring, alerting, and operational tooling to improve reliability and performance.

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience in backend or platform engineering.
• Demonstrated experience building a SaaS platform from zero to one, preferably in an early-stage, venture-backed startup.
• Experience building the platform layer of a multitenant SaaS or cloud product, including components such as control planes, tenant management, authentication, RBAC, API gateways, billing, or metering.
• Production experience with Kubernetes.
• Strong proficiency in Go is preferred.
• Hands-on experience with gRPC, PostgreSQL, and Terraform.
• Experience designing, developing, and operating production-grade cloud platforms or distributed backend services.
• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field from a top-30 computer science program.
• A strong engineering track record demonstrated through experience at a leading infrastructure or cloud company, a well-funded Series A–C infrastructure startup, or another recognized indicator of technical excellence.
• Ability to take ownership of complex technical projects and deliver scalable, maintainable solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as an early employee, ideally among the first 30 employees, at a startup that subsequently scaled.
• Experience designing and operating multitenant cloud platforms.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure architecture, distributed systems, and microservices.
• Experience building commercial cloud products from initial architecture through production deployment.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who has built platform infrastructure rather than simply maintained existing systems.

You should have experience making foundational architectural decisions, developing core platform services, and operating production systems in a fast-growing startup environment.

Candidates whose experience is limited to database internals, search, analytics, fintech, low-level systems, or infrastructure maintenance without ownership of a multitenant SaaS platform may not be a strong fit.
