An Electromyography (EMG) Technician is a specialized healthcare professional who works under the supervision of a physician or neurologist to diagnose and monitor neuromuscular disorders. They use advanced diagnostic equipment to measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves, supporting accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. EMG Technicians use electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) to detect conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathies, myopathies, and other neuromuscular diseases. Their work is integral to neurology and physical medicine teams, ensuring both technical accuracy and patient comfort.

Key Responsibilities: Technical and Clinical Skills
  • Patient Preparation & Communication: Explain the EMG/NCS procedure to patients, address concerns, and ensure comfort and dignity
  • Test Setup & Calibration: Prepare and calibrate EMG/NCS equipment according to protocols, ensuring accurate readings
  • Data Collection: Monitor and record electrical activity during muscle contraction and relaxation, and during nerve stimulation for NCS
  • Artifact Recognition: Work with MD to identify and eliminate physiological and non-physiological artifacts to improve test quality
  • Documentation: Record detailed findings, abnormal results, and observations in patient charts, following HIPAA compliance
  • Equipment Maintenance: Sanitize, sterilize, and maintain EMG/NCS equipment; report malfunctions promptly
  • Patient Care: Provide comfort, privacy, and dignity during testing; follow up with patients
  • Collaboration: Work with neurologist, physicians, and other healthcare providers to discuss results and support treatment plans
  • Additional Duties: Botulinum toxin injections, manage lab inventory and supplies
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Strong technical proficiency, precision, patience, and the ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow strict medical protocols
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient interactions
