Job summary

The City of Syracuse is seeking a skilled Valve Operator to manage municipal water distribution by locating, accessing, and operating valves and related equipment. He/She works under supervision and handles emergency situations with independent judgment and careful prioritization of repairs.

Responsibilities include locating valves, exposing valve boxes, operating hydrants, and recording logs. Eligibility requires relevant experience and a valid NY non-CDL/CDL with appropriate endorsements.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of safety precautions for equipment used in valve operations
• Understanding of water distribution systems and valve operation sequence
• Ability to lead a group in emergencies and to prioritize repair work
• Ability to read and interpret maps and files to locate valves
• Effective communication and public interaction skills
• Ability to perform heavy labor and operate in demanding conditions

Responsibilities

• Locate valves in the water system and access valve boxes
• Open, close, and operate valves as directed to manage water flow and emergencies
• Excavate and expose valve boxes and hydrants for maintenance
• Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure readiness
• Investigate leaks and water complaints as required
• Mark water lines and respond to external requests
• Record shift logs and incident reports as required
• Drive emergency vehicle when assigned
