Job summary

Arizona Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Center (AVECCC) Gilbert is seeking a DVM to join our permanent, overnight-only emergency team. You will work three 12-hour shifts per week in a state-of-the-art 22,000-square-foot facility with extensive ICU capabilities and 24/7 support from board-certified Critical Care specialists.

Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary degree; eligibility for Arizona licensure.
  • Rotating internship completed or at least three years of emergency medicine experience.
  • Willingness to work an overnight-only schedule.
  • Strong communication and collaborative clinical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality emergency and critical care to a diverse caseload of companion animals.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for urgent and emergent cases.
  • Provide comprehensive emergency care with a balanced mix of new cases, triage, and hospitalized patients.
  • Perform emergency procedures and stabilise critically ill patients using evidence-based medicine.
  • Collaborate with Emergency Veterinarians, Critical Care specialists, and staff to ensure seamless patient care.

Schedule: Three 12-hour shifts per week | Overnight only

At Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center (AVECCC), you’ll practice advanced emergency and critical care medicine in a 22,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art hospital supported by an exceptional team of emergency doctors, specialists, technicians, and critical care professionals.

Our Gilbert hospital is the hub of our established internship and Emergency & Critical Care residency programs, creating an environment where education, collaboration, and continued professional growth are part of everyday practice. Weekly intern lectures, resident rounds, on-site CE, and in-depth cage-side rounds provide ongoing opportunities to learn and grow at every stage of your career.

You’ll also have 24/7 consultation support from board-certified Critical Care specialists, either in person or by phone. Gilbert offers daily DACVECC coverage and multiple doctors on shift, providing exceptional collaboration and support when managing complex cases.

Our team also includes an on-site social worker and a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) who leads staff training and development, helping ensure our Emergency and Critical Care DVMs have highly trained technical support.

And we’re growing. Due to increasing demand, AVECCC Gilbert is expanding its ICU, adding capacity and resources to provide even more lifesaving care to pets throughout the rapidly growing East and Southeast Valley.

Advanced Medicine & Technology

AVECCC Gilbert provides the technology, resources, and specialty collaboration needed to manage complex emergency and critical care cases, including:

  • ICU long-term ventilator (Servo-u)
  • Anesthesia ventilator
  • High-flow oxygen unit
  • PrismaFlex units for extracorporeal therapies, including CRRT and TPE
  • Electronic treatment sheets through SmartFlow
  • Web-based electronic medical records through ezyVet with off-site accessibility
  • On-site CT and ultrasonography
  • Collaboration with specialists in Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Radiology, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Dentistry, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology
  • Strong collaboration with nearby Neurology specialists

In your day-to-day, you will:
  • Deliver high-quality emergency and critical care to a diverse caseload of companion animals.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for patients presenting with urgent and emergent medical conditions.
  • Provide comprehensive emergency care through a balanced mix of receiving new emergency cases, triaging incoming patients, and managing hospitalized patients throughout their course of treatment.
  • Perform emergency procedures and stabilize critically ill or injured patients using evidence-based medicine.
  • Collaborate closely with Emergency Veterinarians, Critical Care specialists, specialty teams, technicians, assistants, and doctor assistants to provide seamless patient care.
  • Communicate clearly and empathetically with pet owners during stressful and emotional situations.
  • Participate in a culture centered on collaboration, mentorship, education, and continuous learning.
What You Bring
  • DVM or equivalent veterinary degree with eligibility for Arizona veterinary licensure.
  • Completion of a rotating internship OR at least three years of emergency medicine experience.
  • Willingness to work an overnight-only schedule.
  • Confidence managing emergency and critical cases and making sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills with a compassionate, client-centered approach.
