Job summary

The City of Farmers Branch seeks an experienced Emergency Vehicle Technician to repair and maintain emergency fire protection and public safety vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and field repairs, with emphasis on safety and documentation.

Ideal candidates have five years in automotive or heavy-truck repair, EVT certifications or equivalents, and a valid CDL or ability to obtain within six months.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Five years' automotive or heavy truck repair experience.
  • EVT Fire Apparatus I & II or Ambulance I & II certifications, or equivalent training.
  • CDL Texas Class A or B within six months of employment; clean driving record.
  • MVAC EPA 609 certification or obtain within six months.
  • Background check, drug/alcohol testing, and DOT/FMCSA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspections on standard and emergency vehicles.
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computerized components; repair accordingly.
  • Respond to roadside/field repairs and document work in fleet software.
  • Conduct vehicle check-in, make-ready, and decommissioning operations.
  • Maintain shop safety and ensure compliance with standards.

Job description

Position Summary

The Fleet Services Emergency Vehicle Technician’s (EVT) primary duties are the repair and maintenance of emergency fire protection and public safety vehicles and equipment. The EVT also performs preventative maintenance, routine maintenance/repairs, and emergency repairs on all City-owned vehicles, including Construction Equipment, Automobiles, Light, Medium, and Heavy-Duty Trucks, Fire Apparatus, Ambulances, Police Pursuit units as well as other Fleet assets.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions represents 20%-50% of working time on a regular basis, subject to the varying demand of specific functions. All functions listed below are considered essential and are expected to be completed regularly and efficiently by any incumbent. Regular, punctual and on-site attendance is essential for all functions listed below:

  • Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with coworkers, other city employees, vendors, and the public.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and state inspections on the City’s fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting and accurate diagnoses of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle components.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled repairs to the City’s fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs standard and emergency vehicles and equipment in accordance to industry, City, State, and Federal standards.
  • Responds to roadside or field repairs.
  • Utilizes fleet maintenance software to record detailed and accurate documentation of service and repairs.
  • Conducts new vehicle and equipment check-in, make-ready, and decommissioning operations.
Other Important Duties

Other Job Functions are essential but represent less than 20% of working time on a regular basis. These are performed with less regularity but are considered essential. All functions listed below are considered essential and are expected to be completed regularly and efficiently by any incumbent.

  • Performs other related job duties as assigned within the scope of essential functions.
  • May be required to work overtime and be on-call on a roating schedule.
  • Performs good housekeeping practices to maintain the shop, work area, tools, and equipment in a safe and orderly manner.
Education and Experience
  • The Fleet Services EVT must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Requires a minimum of five years of experience in automotive and/or heavy truck repair
  • One year of small engine repair experience is preferred
  • Two years experience in Fire Apparatus repair is preferred
  • Must possess EVT Fire Apparatus Level I & II or EVT Ambulance Level I & II certifications, or applicable manufacturer training and certifications.
  • Must be “Official State of Texas Vehicle Inspector” or obtain within first six months of employment
  • Must possess a Class A or B CDL Texas Driver’s License or obtain within first six months of employment, with a good driving record
  • Must have Mobile Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) EPA 609 Certification or obtain within first six months of employment
  • License and certifications must be maintained during the term of employment

Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check, drug and alcohol test, and a motor vehicle review. Current CDL holders must pass a DOT-regulated drug/alcohol test and successfully complete the FMCSA Clearinghouse background check process.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards and regulations for emergency vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Must have knowledge of repairs and troubleshooting of automotive, heavy truck, and construction equipment
  • Ability to read, understand and comprehend owners’ manuals, repairs manuals, schematics, and drawings to repair and maintain the fleet in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations for troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair procedures
  • Knowledge of fluids and components used in the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment
  • Knowledge of proper disposal procedures for used oils, chemicals, and other hazardous materials
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, contribute as a team member, and treat others with respect
  • Ability to prioritize, monitor, and organize work assignments efficiently
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to complete tasks as assigned
  • Skill in operating shop tools and equipment while following safety practices and standard operating procedures
  • Skilled in the use of computers, maintenance software, and other office equipment
  • Skill in proactively identifying and resolving issues, consistently making sound decisions, and correctly executing policy processes and procedures
Work Environment
  • Physical demands essential to a Fleet EVT include strenuous activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, sweeping, and carrying heavy objects.
  • Frequent standing, crawling, kneeling, crouching, balancing, stooping, and climbing will be required.
  • Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force consistently.
  • Mental and visual acuity along with talking and hearing are required to routinely perform physical activities and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Safety PPE equipment is provided and must be worn as required by policy and good safety practices.

Work is performed primarily inside and outside and is subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions. The worker may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke and gases, and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces.
