Job description

Pay Rate: To maintain internal equity, we have identified the pay rate for this position at the Oakland Zoo as $23.71 per hour . An offer at this pay rate will be our best and final compensation offer.

Position Summary

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) plays a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of guests and staff. This position is responsible for responding to medical emergencies, assessing and providing medical care, and assists with safety preparedness across the Zoo. Strong customer service skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential. This role requires flexibility, teamwork, and a commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Essential Job Duties

  • Responds to radio calls and provides assessment of on-view situations associated with injury or illness.
  • Administers basic first aid and life support as needed while assessing the need for advanced medical intervention.
  • Oversees institution-wide first aid and disaster kit supplies and ensures fire extinguishers are properly placed, certified, and ready for use.
  • Supports the development and implementation of Disaster Preparedness Plans.
  • Serves as the first responder for locating lost guests or children, with security providing supplemental support.
  • Acts as the primary contact for lost and found inquiries, handling on-site requests, emails, and voicemails.
  • Conducts daily morning inspections of Zoo and Park grounds to identify and document safety hazards.
  • Places and retrieves traffic cones, temporary signs, and barriers as needed for operational and safety purposes.
  • Completes and maintains Daily Activity Reports/Logs, as well as Vehicle Usage Logs, and submits maintenance requests as necessary.
  • Enforces rules and regulations in the absence of security officers and provides support when security staffing is low.
  • Performs Fire Watch duties and responds to fire or burglary alarm activations.
  • Provides escort services for revenue transfers, vendors, and guests requiring assistance.
  • Assists security in clearing the Zoo and completing the closure checklist.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to both internal teams (co-workers) and external stakeholders (vendors, visitors, customers, etc.).
  • Provides administrative support as needed under the direction of the Public Safety management team.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned

Who You Are

  • At least 18 years old
  • State of California E.M.T. Certification
  • CPR pro card
  • High School Graduate or G.E.D
  • Experience in patient care and/or customer service.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively read, write, and follow directions in English.
  • Strong de-escalation skills, situational awareness, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Reliable, dependable, honest, and professional, with a courteous demeanor and the ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
  • Must be available to work nights particularly during Glowfari (winter season), weekends and holidays unless otherwise authorized.
  • Able to bend and twist, lift 25 lbs, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for 8-hour shifts
