Job Summary:
This position is accountable for providing clinical and technical support procedures, assisting nurses and medical staff to ensure quality care, and performing clerical, communication, and other related duties to facilitate the efficient functioning of the Care Center services. Duties and responsibilities are performed according to standards outlined in the competency-based evaluation tool. The incumbent will support the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public, and co-workers.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate performance according to expectations and standards set by the position description.
- Build collaborative relationships with MWHC/ED staff, nursing, and physicians, both verbally and through accurate documentation.
- Assist nurses in collecting patient data and specimens.
- Perform designated patient care procedures to support medical staff.
- Participate in unit and MWHC infection control plans and performance improvement processes.
- Assist the Manager with regulatory readiness as needed.
- Engage in unit risk management planning.
- Demonstrate effective communication, customer service, and team-building skills.
- Take responsibility for professional growth, development, and regulatory and educational requirements at the department level.
- Maintain licensure or certifications relevant to the position during employment.
- Perform clerical responsibilities using the hospital's information systems.
- Facilitate communication between diagnostic/testing areas, patient care areas, and families.
- Respond to patient call lights and communicate requests to appropriate personnel immediately.
- Carry out patient and family requests when appropriate.
- Serve as a friendly unit receptionist for staff, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
- Coordinate physician and departmental consults until tasks are complete.
- Maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Coordinate equipment and supply needs with the Supply Agent, assist in cleaning and maintaining equipment, and report malfunctions.
- Initiate emergency procedures as directed.
- Perform additional duties as appropriate, including those of other care team members.
- Perform Communication Coordinator duties as needed.
- Perform venipuncture, start IVs, and collect specimens with proper labeling and transportation.
- Apply cardiac monitors when appropriate and perform 12-lead EKGs.
- Set up sterile trays for suturing and sterile procedures.
- Insert Foley catheters when appropriate and document intake and output.
- Perform splinting and/or apply orthopedic adjuncts per physician orders.
Qualifications:
- High School / GED required.
- Current Virginia State EMT Certification and/or National Registry required.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.
- One (1) year EMT, military corpsman, or clinical-related experience preferred.
- AHA ACLS, PALS certifications preferred.
