The Saint Paul Fire Department protects the life and property of the people of Saint Paul. We are a dedicated all hazard response agency comprised of Firefighters, EMT's, public educators, support staff and maintenance personnel - creating an effective team that are proud to serve the residents of our Capitol City.
As a Saint Paul Fire Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), you will be responsible for:
EMT's will work 8-12 hour rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Employees also receive a 6.25% night differential rate for any hours worked between 6 PM and 6 AM. EMT's will go through a 2 week classroom academy, 1 week of ALS ride alongs, and 4-6 weeks on the job training. Starting rate is negotiable based on experience. Paramedics are strongly encouraged to apply.

2.5 year - $28.31
3 year - $29.75
4 year - $31.07
The EMT position serves as a pathway to becoming a Saint Paul Firefighter once qualifying employees meet City promotional rights after 2 years of service. More information on City promotional rights may be found here .

Position Requirements
Applicants must obtain both a State of Minnesota and National Registry EMT or Paramedic certification. If you do not possess a State of MN certification, you must register with the MN EMSRB Board, at the following link in order to obtain your state certification:MN EMSRB Board eLicense Portal
Please Note:Applicants who are currently enrolled in an EMT program with an anticipated completion date prior to December 2025are eligible to apply but will not be considered for aninterview until both State and National certifications are provided to Human Resources.

Assessment: Qualifications Rating
The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Be as specific and detailed as possible in completing your application and questionnaire. You must submit your completed application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Open Job Posting: This posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements.
Eligible Lists: Eligible lists are typically created from a pass/fail assessment. Those who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months. Hiring Managers may interview/hire anyone from the list.
Final Selection Process: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
Pre-Employment Screening:This position will require a medical examination, psychological assessment, driver's license check, drug test, National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and State of Minnesota EMT certification check, and a background check which may include criminal history and employment history as a condition of employment.
