Job summary

Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham is actively seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician to join our Emergency and ICU team in Birmingham, AL. This role offers hands-on nursing care, rapid assessments, and close collaboration with doctors in a state-of-the-art specialty hospital.

You will contribute to diagnostics, treatments, and monitoring while maintaining meticulous records and communicating with clients.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant in general practice or emergency medicine.
• LVT certification is prioritized.
• Working knowledge of basic veterinary medicine including restraint, diagnostic imaging, phlebotomy, venipuncture, anesthesia, drug calculations, laboratory equipment, and laboratory procedures.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a busy emergency and ICU environment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with clients and veterinary team members.
• Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to a positive, respectful, and supportive hospital culture.
• Commitment to continued learning and developing advanced Veterinary Technician skills.
• Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on nursing care and monitoring for emergency and hospitalized patients.
• Assist with patient assessment, treatments, diagnostics, and procedures.
• Safely restrain and handle patients using appropriate techniques.
• Perform phlebotomy and venipuncture and assist with IV catheter placement.
• Assist with diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, laboratory testing, and other clinical procedures.
• Perform accurate drug calculations and administer medications as directed; monitor patients and communicate changes to the medical team.
• Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation.
• Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients and team members.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked patient care environment.
• Work collaboratively with Veterinary Technicians, assistants, doctors, and other hospital team members.
