Job summary

The Legal Aid Society is seeking a Paralegal Casehandler to join the Emergency Housing Response Teams in the Bronx Neighborhood Office. You will work with a team of supervisors, attorneys, and paralegals to provide representation to clients facing eviction and to obtain relief and support.

Responsibilities include client intake, advising on benefits, collaborating with attorneys, and preparing motion documents, all while maintaining case records and working flexible hours as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
• ABA-accredited paralegal program certificate acceptable.
• At least a high school diploma/GED with 4+ years of legal work experience.
• Total of 4+ years across education and legal work.
• Excellent written, oral advocacy, and computer skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct assistance to clients in benefits area.
• Conduct intake interviews, provide advice and direct assistance, assess requests for services.
• Collaborate with staff and supervising attorneys to resolve benefits issues in housing cases.
• Obtain rent arrears payments and other arrears relief.
• Advocate with agencies regarding government benefits.
• Handle high volume cases and coordinate with community organizations.
• Prepare motion documents including client affidavits.
• Maintain accurate case records and archives.
• Conduct virtual, courthouse-based, and off-site intake, including evenings.
• Work off-site and during evening hours as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
