Job summary

Hennepin Healthcare seeks an Emergency Department Technician to support patient care on the main HCMC campus. This role provides direct and indirect care, responds to calls, monitors vitals, and collaborates with nurses to maintain patient safety.

You will work a rotating 12-hour schedule, including every third weekend, with orientation to our patient- and family-centered care approach and EPIC records system.

Qualifications

  • Current MN Nursing Assistant Registry certification with 6 months of health care experience.
  • EMT/EMT-P certification is acceptable as an alternative.
  • Enrollment in nursing program with clinical rotation completes qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to patient call lights promptly and relay needs to RN or nurse supervisor.
  • Assist with initial patient assessments and ongoing vital signs monitoring.
  • Maintain infection control practices and safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Document care in the electronic medical record and communicate changes to the care team.

This is accomplished through the job components of patient services, role modeling, quality/resource stewardship and patient advocacy/customer service.RESPONSIBILITIESUsing principles of Patient & Family Centered Care, develops and maintains a positive working relationship with patients and family, team members, department and medical center personnelResponds to patients call lights in a timely manner, identifies patient needs, and provides patients with appropriate response or communicates needs to appropriate team membersAdapts patient care activities respective to varying patient population to adhere to hospital the mission, vision, values, and essential behaviors. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all timesPerforms intentional rounding in collaboration with the RNReports patient/family complaints to primary nurse, charge nurse, or RN SupervisorMaintains safe environment for patients and fellow team members including use of organizational communication routes/devicesCompletes all mandatory hospital and unit-based requirements for the position by due date. Participates in staff meetings, training, and quality improvement initiativesPerforms clinical duties as defined in orientation packet (skills checkoff), and through required competencyCommunicates any changes or pertinent information related to the patient’s physical appearance and attitude, I & O, vital signs, and point of care testing to the nurse. Records which nurse was notified for all abnormal resultsAssists with initial patient assessments and ongoing vital sign monitoring. Applies monitoring equipment and obtains vital signsMay perform various technical procedures after training, competency validation, and upon delegation from a Registered Nurse, such as phlebotomy, wound care/splinting, point-of-care testing, patient decontamination, foley catheter insertion/removal, specimen collection, and IV insertion/removalAssists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, toileting, ambulation, and feedingTransports patients safely within the hospitalPrepares rooms for incoming patients. Set up, clean, and stock medical equipment and procedure traysEnsures infection control practices are followed consistentlyMaintains accurate and timely records of care in the electronic medical recordPerforms other duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONSMinimum Qualifications:Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry with 6 months of experience in a health care setting-And/or-EMT/EMT-P Certified-And/or-At least 12 months of direct patient care experience in a hospital, TCU or Skilled Nursing facilityAnd/or-Enrolled in a nursing program and completion of one 1 clinical rotationPreferred Qualifications:High school graduate or equivalentTraining/equivalent experience as a nursing assistant, health care assistant, emergency department technician, or EMT/EMT-PCurrent student (enrolled) in a 4-year RN programExperience with EPIC and/or similar electronic health record systemOne year Nursing Assistant experience in a similar (hospital) settingKnowledge of medical terminologyPrevious phlebotomy experienceKnowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:The ability to establish effective relationships with health care teamAbility to work independentlyCustomer service experienceAbility to prioritize and organize tasks in a fast-paced environmentAbility to perform job duties that meet departmental performance expectations as well as organizational standards related to quality, accuracy, productivity, patient & family centered care, customer service, etcLicense/Certifications:Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or must be obtained prior to orientation completionYou've made the right choice in considering Hennepin Healthcare for your employment.
