Job summary

Penn Medicine—Lancaster General Hospital is seeking a Customer Service Specialist to provide accurate patient access services in the Emergency Department, including patient identification, arrival, registration, insurance verification, and visitor management. The role requires strong communication and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Location is Lancaster, PA; work schedule is 3rd shift (11pm–7am) with $1.50 premium pay.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year of clerical, customer service, or administrative experience.
• Experience with basic computer systems and keyboarding.
• Experience in patient registration, insurance verification, or point-of-service collections.
• Knowledge of healthcare compliance and regulatory guidelines.
• Epic or comparable EMR experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Emergency Department team to support patient care and experience.
• Accurately manage patient arrival processes and identify patients during armband placement.
• Perform bedside registration for various ED patient types.
• Verify and collect patient demographic, insurance, and guarantor information.
• Screen, log, and badge visitors per policies; manage patient paging systems.
• Triage and route messages based on urgency; handle ED calls.
• Explain financial responsibilities and assist with point-of-service collections.
• Verify insurance coverage and scan documents into the EMR.
• Ensure required documentation and EMTALA compliance; resolve registration discrepancies.
