Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks an Emergency Department Technician (EDT) to join the ED team at M Health Fairview St Johns Hospital in Maplewood, MN.

The EDT assists nurses with patient care, transports patients and equipment, sets up rooms, and manages supplies in a fast-paced ED setting. You will work with physicians, nurses, and staff to support patient care on a 0.60 FTE schedule with 8-hour evening shifts and alternating weekends.

Qualifications

• BLS certification is required.
• ONE of the listed certifications or enrollments is required (EMT/ERT, Paramedic, CNA MN Registry, LPN/RN/NP program with clinicals, six months of patient care, completion of Fairview OnTrack program, or LPN licensure).
• This role supports nursing staff and requires patient-care tasks with appropriate supervision.

Responsibilities

• Transports patients by wheelchair or cart.
• Assists patients with ambulation and positioning.
• Informs RN of patient/family observations and concerns.
• Responds promptly to patient call lights/requests.
• Maintains patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality.

Job Overview

Fairview is looking for an Emergency Department Technician (EDT) to join our ED team at our M Health Fairview St Johns Hospital in Maplewood, MN.

The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) assists the professional nurse in delivering patient care, transporting patients and equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and managing supplies. Depending on unit needs and the discretion of the professional nurse, the EDT may be assigned patient care responsibilities.

Our Emergency Department cares for patients of all ages with a wide range of urgent and critical medical conditions. As part of our ED team, Emergency Department Technicians play a key role in supporting patient care. You’ll work alongside experienced emergency medicine physicians, nurses, and clinical staff in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. St. Johns offers comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services on a welcoming 32-acre suburban campus, combining compassionate, patient-centered care with advanced technology and innovative treatments.

Schedule: This position is a 0.60 FTE (48 hours per pay period) and works 8-hour evening 11am-7:30pm shifts with an every-other-weekend rotation.

Job Expectations

Provides patient care:

• Transports patients by wheelchair and cart
• Assists patients with ambulation and positioning
• Informs RN of patient/family observations and concerns
• Promptly responds to patient call lights/requests
• Demonstrates concern for patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality
• Performs tasks with adaptations or modifications consistent with patients ages and developmental abilities
• Obtains ordered specimens from patient
• Transports specimens and blood products
• Demonstrates adherence to proper procedures
• Assists in resuscitation
• Functions as nurse extender: assists nurses with patient care activities

Documents patient care activities and procedures on the nursing records.

• Documentation is clear, concise, accurate and timely

Maintains room/unit and supplies

• Restocks room, supplies, and carts
• Assists with patient room clean-up between patients
• Completes room and cart checklist

Performs quality control checks on designated pieces of equipment

• Completes quality control checklist
• Reports discrepancies and malfunctions to charge nurse or manager

Required Qualifications (Must have BLS certification and ONE of the following)

• Current EMT or ERT certification
• Current Paramedic certification
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) on the MN Registry
• Enrolled in an LPN, RN, or NP program (with at least 1 completed clinical semester)
• Six months of recent hands-on patient care experience (acute, long-term, or home care)
• Completed Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program
• LPN licensure

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ years of Emergency Department experience (EMT, ERT, paramedic, scribe, etc.)
• Current experience as a CNA or NST
