Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Register emergency patients quickly and accurately in the registration system.
  • Collect patient liabilities and verify insurance information.
  • Obtain demographic, guarantor, and insurance details; ensure correct documentation.
  • Obtain physician orders for services for patients in observation or admission status.
  • Perform insurance eligibility checks and document findings in the system.
  • Explain patient liabilities and collect co-pays/deposits at discharge.
  • Maintain coverage of the registration area to assist clinical partners.

Completes the registration process for emergency patients and direct admits sent to the emergency department. Collects patient liabilities upon discharge from the emergency department.# **Major Job Functions**The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:* Registers emergency service patients in a fast-paced environment, creating patient accounts within (90) seconds of patient’s arrival* Queries EAD and enters accurate patient demographics into the computer system to obtain the correct patient medical record number and account number* Responsible for placing patient identification armbands on all Emergency Department patients after accounts are created to ensure patient safety* During the registration process, the ED Access Representative obtains all demographic, guarantor, and insurance information and accurately document information into the registration system* Patients being placed in observation or admission status, the ED Access Representative will obtain a physician order to support services rendered.* Performs insurance eligibility/benefit verification, utilizing an EDI transaction and documenting information within the appropriate registration system* Informs patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, and deposits at the point of discharge* Provides timely and continual coverage of assigned work area in order to offer prompt patient service and be available for all clinical partners registration needs* Other duties as assigned# **Minimum Qualifications**The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:## **Education and Formal Training**:* High school diploma or equivalent required* College courses in Business, Medical Office Administration, Health Care Administration, and/or Computer Technology preferred## **Work Experience**:* 2 years insurance/clerical experience within a hospital or medical office setting preferred## **Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required**:* Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language* Knowledge of insurance and collection of payments preferred* Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and basic functionality of personal computer* Ability to type and perform data entry functions* Excellent verbal and written communication skills* Customer service skills to a variety of customers from different cultural and economic backgrounds preferred* Critical thinking skills and ability to problem-solve and multi-task* Ability to appropriately handle complexity and stress with the changing needs of the patients, families, visitors, and the Health System## **Physical Requirements**:* Ability to communicate orally, see, and hear to collect information* Manual dexterity to operate office equipment* Subject to eyestrain due to the many hours spent looking at a computer screen* Sitting or standing in intervals for long periods of time* Noise level is low to moderate* Answers telephone calls, uses personal computer, and other business machines extensively* Bends, reaches, pushes and pulls file drawers to file records and reports* Ability to transport patients and assist with baggage* Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds**Required Licenses and Certifications**Cape Fear Valley Health System is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veteran/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity
