Job summary

City of Southfield Police Department is seeking a PST/911 Dispatcher to join a 24/7 public safety communications team in Southfield, MI. You will receive and prioritize calls, assess information, and dispatch police, fire, and EMS as needed.

Applicants must have a high school diploma, at least one year in public/public-safety call centers, and the ability to operate a CAD system. Excellent communication skills and a clean driving record are required; overtime is common.

Qualifications

• Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum one year of relevant public service or high-volume call center experience.
• Ability to learn and operate a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
• Good voice, speech, and communication skills for telephone and radio operations.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• No felony convictions.
• Type at least 30 words per minute.
• Read and interpret maps.

Responsibilities

• Receive and prioritize incoming emergency and non-emergency calls, complaints, and inquiries from the public.
• Evaluate the information and dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services as needed.
• Perform crisis intervention with distraught callers when necessary.
• Use good judgment and maintain composure during extremely stressful situations.
• Operate communications equipment including computers, radios, and telephones.
• Full-time shift work, including days, afternoons, midnights, weekends, and holidays; overtime may be required.
