Job summary

The City of Ames is seeking a Public Safety Dispatcher for the Ames Police Department. The dispatcher handles emergency and non‑emergency calls, dispatches police, fire, and EMS, and operates a complex communications system in a 24/7/365 environment.

The role requires high school completion, the ability to obtain Iowa/NCIC, CPR, and EMS dispatch certifications within six months, and successful completion of a multi‑stage selection process. Residency and ongoing training are part of the job.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• College coursework and/or two years relevant work experience may be preferred.

Responsibilities

• Answers emergency and non‑emergency calls for service.
• Receives and relays messages to appropriate personnel.
• Directs requests for police, fire, and EMS to the appropriate agency.
• Prioritizes calls and dispatches resources per operating procedures.
• Operates radio console and monitors cameras/alarms.
• Maintains logs and status of units and communications.
• Maintains contact with units during shift.
• Works with other City divisions and departments.
