Job summary

Boston Engineering is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to develop software for robotics, autonomous systems, medical devices, defense technologies, and commercial products. This hands-on role covers architecture through integration, testing, and a working product with opportunities to contribute across disciplines.

The ideal candidate has 0–5 years of embedded experience, strong C/C++, Python, and Linux skills, and a willingness to work closely with hardware on a variety of platforms.

Qualifications

• BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
• 0–5 years of professional software or embedded development experience; relevant co-op/internship considered.
• Experience with Git and standard version control workflows.
• Familiarity with build systems, debugging tools, and modern software practices.
• Proven C and C++ fundamentals; Python or scripting.
• Understanding of embedded systems and hardware interaction.
• Knowledge of real-time software concepts, including scheduling & concurrency.
• Ability to read datasheets and interface specs.
• Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
• Eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Develop embedded software and firmware in C and C++ for new and existing products.
• Work with microcontrollers, RTOS-based systems, and embedded Linux platforms.
• Integrate sensors, actuators, and hardware into embedded systems.
• Build and debug interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, Ethernet, GPIO).
• Use Python and other tools for testing, automation, and integration.
• Bring up and debug software on custom hardware and early prototypes.
• Investigate issues across software and hardware with debuggers and logs.
• Write tests and support repeatable build, test, and integration workflows.
• Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and project planning.
• Collaborate across engineering disciplines; document designs and interfaces.
