Embedded Flight Software Engineer | Los Angeles, CA | $150,000 - $200,000 + Equity
If you enjoy working where software meets hardware, with bootloaders, drivers, and FPGA interfaces on real flight units, this one's for you.
I'm partnering with a Los Angeles spacecraft company that delivers custom satellites at industry-leading speed. They need an experienced Embedded Flight Software Engineer to bridge the gap between low-level hardware and high-level FSW logic, making sure spacecraft boot reliably, recover safely, and communicate deterministically in space.
What you'll be doing
- Developing low-level C/C++ drivers, BSPs, and hardware interfaces for microcontrollers, FPGAs, and standard comms buses
- Designing stage-1 and stage-2 bootloaders, partition swapping logic, and fail-safe recovery modes
- Architecting memory management across NOR/NAND Flash, SRAM, and EEPROM to protect data integrity across reboots
- Configuring bus interfaces (SPI, I2C, CAN, UART, SpaceWire, PCIe) between compute units, peripherals, and payloads
- Implementing telemetry collection, time synchronization, and task scheduling in RTOS or embedded OS environments
- Running HIL testing and debugging on flatsats with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and FPGA emulator tools
- Contributing to CI/CD workflows and test campaigns on testbeds and flight units
- Providing technical guidance on FSW architecture to fellow engineers
What you'll bring
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, or a similar field
- 5+ years of embedded software experience, including low-level drivers, hardware integration, or bootloaders
- Strong C and C++, plus embedded Linux and RTOS experience
- Hands-on BSP, device driver, and boot system development
- Experience with FPGAs, custom hardware interfaces, and low-level protocols (SPI, I2C, CAN, UART)
- Familiarity with Git and automated testing/CI
- Nice to have: custom FPGA drivers, bootloader design, Flash file systems, image verification and recovery, and clean room/ESD experience
- Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, a US DoD Top Secret clearance
What's on offer
- $150,000 - $200,000 base salary, depending on experience
- Equity package
- Comprehensive benefits, including paid medical, dental, vision, flexible vacation, and family leave
This is a full-time, on-site role at the Los Angeles facility (not remote or hybrid). It's a US-based role, and relocation assistance is available for the right person.
