Software Engineer II / III / IV / V – Reverse Engineering in Warfare Systems (WS) at HII Mission Technologies, Roanoke, VA.

Compensation

Anticipated Salary Range: $75,000.00 – $180,000.00.

Travel

Required Travel: 0 – 10%.

Security Clearance

Applicants must be U.S. citizens with the ability to obtain a DoD security clearance. No sponsorship for visas.

Full‑time onsite in Roanoke, VA.

Job Description

We are seeking engineers to lead reverse engineering of microelectronic and application software. The role includes firmware extraction, plugin development, support for simulation platforms, and exploit development. The engineer will mentor junior engineers and produce detailed reports of system capabilities, anomalies, and vulnerabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Lead reverse engineering efforts for systems of interest.
  • Mentor junior engineers in reverse engineering and development processes.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, understanding complex systems with minimal or no documentation.
  • Collaborate with teammates to divide complex systems into subsystems and share knowledge.
  • Produce reports of system capabilities, anomalies, and vulnerabilities at various fidelity levels for customers.
  • Develop tools or exploit chains based on university papers with limited documentation.
  • Support firmware extraction, plugin development, and simulation platforms for unsupported processors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • U.S. citizen with ability to obtain DoD security clearance.
  • Experience with software reverse engineering tools such as Ghidra, Binary Ninja, IDA Pro.
  • Experience with debuggers and simulators including GDB, QEMU, Renode, LLVM.
  • Experience with firmware extraction, exploit development, or related security skills.
  • Familiarity with digital logic designs and FPGA systems.
  • Proficiency with modern C++ (≥C++17) and STL.
  • Experience with Python and design patterns.
  • Experience with source control systems (git, svn, perforce).
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly.
Preferred Experience
  • Active security clearance.
  • Experience with C++
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with design patterns.
  • Familiarity with Verilog or VHDL.
  • Experience with FPGA design software (Quartus, ISE, Vivado).
  • Experience with binary patching and bypassing encryption schemes.
  • Published research in cybersecurity, software exploitation, or reverse engineering.
Physical Requirements
  • Sedentary work, extended periods of computer‑based analysis.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, operating tools, manipulating small electronics, or firmware extraction.
  • Visual acuity for detailed digital information, technical documentation, microelectronic components, and code review.
  • Occasional standing or walking between workstations and collaborative areas.
  • Light lifting (≤ 20 lb).
  • Fine motor skills for microelectronics, connectors, and debugging hardware.
  • Clear verbal and written communication for mentoring, collaboration, and report writing.
  • High concentration and problem‑solving ability for complex systems and rapid learning.
