The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory seeks an Applied Electromagnetic/RF Research and Development Engineer to join the Spectrum and Signature Solutions team. The role focuses on leading PI-level RF/electromagnetics research supporting DoD programs and national security objectives.

You will oversee sensitive R&D, perform field and lab measurements, develop concepts, and interact with DoD/IC sponsors. Some travel required; security clearance may be needed.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on RF/microwave instrumentation experience (network/spectrum analyzers, EMI/EMC measurements).
  • Lab and field troubleshooting of RF systems.
  • MATLAB/Python for instrument control and data analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent report writing capabilities.
  • RF/microwave engineering for ground, air and sea-based operations.
  • Familiarity with CST Microwave Studio or REMCOM XFdtd.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee R&D focused on applied electromagnetics as a Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Provide technical knowledge within the lab, develop concepts, and oversee RF research.
  • Contribute to RF instrumentation automation/control solutions.
  • Conduct RF/microwave lab-based and field measurements and experimentation.
  • Coordinate field measurements at outdoor ranges and EMC chambers.
  • Assess RF systems from the Defense Industrial Base and validate solutions.
  • Assist with field-measurement setups and test plans.
  • Occasional sponsor-mandated travel.
