Job summary

Sporting Kansas City seeks a First-Team Performance Data Scientist to connect the HP front end with the club's centralized data analytics infrastructure. You will deliver holistic, player-centric health and performance insights to inform training, readiness, injury prevention, and return-to-play decisions.

The role emphasizes building models, dashboards, and workflows that support HP, technical, and recruiting departments, while maintaining HIPAA-compliant data practices.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a sports environment, preferably with soccer, at an elite level.
• Strong understanding and familiarity of MLS preferred.
• Master’s degree or higher in Sports Science, Data Science, or a related field.
• Knowledge of, and experience in, utilizing sports science technologies (GPS, Optical Tracking, Internal Load Monitoring, VALD, Force Plates, Physiologic Testing, AMS platforms).
• Must be an expert in various data languages (R, Python, Shiny Apps, Tableau, Power BI, Excel, etc.)
• Must be skilled in building models and platforms that can create answers to performance questions.
• High level of comfort with all major AMS systems (Kitman Labs, SmartaBase, etc.)
• Highly knowledgeable in data security.
• CPSS certification and HIPAA related certifications.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all peripheral First Team performance data science workflows and data infrastructure connections.
• Train data and manage load/readiness analyses.
• Conduct movement analysis and assess strength, power, speed, agility, and fitness.
• Ensure data hygiene and quality control across sources.
• Develop analytical models to evaluate training periodization and forecast microcycles impact.
• Build dashboards and tools to improve workflow precision.
• Provide insights on workload trends, performance benchmarks, and return-to-play indicators.
• Collaborate with data analytics team to connect data across sports science, analysis, and recruiting.
