Job summary

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks an experienced Elevator Mechanic to service, inspect, repair, and install elevator systems across campus. This role relies on wiring diagrams, safety codes, and annual traction/hydraulic testing while documenting work orders and maintenance logs.

Role requires physical strength to lift up to 50 lbs unaided and up to 500 lbs with assistance, strong problem-solving skills, and flexibility to work overtime and emergencies on short notice.

Qualifications

• Elevator systems knowledge including hydraulic, electric, gearless systems and related components.
• Troubleshoot electro/mechanical systems; diagnose malfunctions or wear.
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams; ensure proper modifications and safety.
• Knowledge of LA City Codes, CA codes, Fire and Seismic Safety Codes and applications.
• Read, interpret and apply technical language in wiring diagrams.
• Clear spoken and written English communication; follow written orders and produce reports.
• Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and moving heavy objects up to 500 lbs with assistance.
• Work in varied conditions; outdoors/indoors, extreme temps, confined spaces.
• Familiarity with UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements and safety practices.
• Ability to work independently and with teams; meet deadlines.
• Mathematical calculations for estimates and material/labor requirements.

Responsibilities

• Service, maintain, inspect, repair, install, and modify elevator systems.
• Dismantle energized components; repair switches, circuit breakers, relays and controllers.
• Replace wiring, safety devices, contacts, coils and boards.
• Replace ropes, hoists, governors and related elevator parts.
• Perform annual safety tests on traction and hydraulic elevators.
• Respond to trouble calls and emergencies; document progress.
• Use wiring diagrams to install/modify controls and components.
• Write reports and maintain maintenance logs; manage work orders and parts.
• Follow safety procedures; clean up job sites after work.
