Elementary Band Teacher

Salary Grade: T01 – T06

Department: Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development

Reports To: Building Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Elementary Band Teacher instructs upper elementary students in music fundamentals, pre-band, and novice band ensemble courses. This role involves planning and implementing a balanced music program, evaluating student progress, and fostering a positive and engaging learning environment. The ideal candidate will inspire students, demonstrate expertise in band instruments, and contribute to the school's music program.

Responsibilities
  1. Instructional Delivery and Curriculum Planning:
    • Teach music fundamentals, pre-band, and novice band ensemble courses to upper elementary students.
    • Plan and implement a balanced music program, organizing daily class time effectively.
    • Utilize a repertoire of diverse music literature appropriate for student ages and skill levels.
  2. Resource Management and Maintenance:
    • Control the storage and use of school-owned instruments and equipment.
    • Make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as needed.
    • Select and requisition books and instructional aids, maintaining inventory records.
  3. Student Assessment and Classroom Management:
    • Evaluate each student’s musical growth and performance, assessing individual contributions.
    • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment.
    • Supervise students during out-of-class activities.
  4. Professional Development and School Involvement:
    • Maintain professional competency through district in-service education and self-selected growth activities.
    • Make provisions for availability to students and parents outside instructional hours.
    • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
    • Participate in faculty committees and sponsor student activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year College or University.
  • Missouri Teaching Certification – Instrumental Music (K-12) or Vocal Music (K-12).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in current techniques and skills in teaching secondary level students.
  • Proficiency in playing and teaching all stringed instruments.
  • Teaching experience in urban schools.

Physical Demands

Employees must be able to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands and fingers, reach, bend, stoop, and lift at least ten pounds. Job requires the employee occasionally to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Visual ability requires mono and color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Terms of Employment

8 hours per day; 5 days/week; 185 workdays.
