Job Description

Position: Teacher Assistant, BAC

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt

No. of Days: According to district approved calendar

Department: Assigned Campus, Special Services

Reports To: Principal, Supervising Teacher, Special Services Supervisor

Supervises: None

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of accredited college or university
  • Educational Aide Certificate from state of Texas
Experience
  • Some experience working with special education children
Position Purpose

To assist the classroom teacher in the care and instruction of the students in the classroom.

Essential Functions
  1. Follow the directions of the supervisor
  2. Preparing materials and displays as directed
  3. Demonstrating acceptable written and verbal skills
  4. Working in a cooperative manner with both teacher and students
  5. Assisting the teacher in maintaining student discipline
  6. Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care and safety of students
  7. Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care of equipment and teaching materials
  8. Changing diapers for students
  9. Toileting students
  10. Feeding or assisting with feeding students
  11. Assisting with lifting students
  12. Assisting students with other self-help skills
  13. Blending foods
  14. Cooking foods
  15. Assisting with loading and unloading students
  16. All other duties as assigned by the supervisor

A teacher assistant in special education is subject to reassignment during the year because of student population shifts.

Qualification Requirements
  1. Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)
  2. Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall
    1. hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher;
    2. have satisfied one of the following requirements:
      1. has three creditable years of experience, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service), as either an educational aide I or II;
      2. has completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas;
  3. Good people skills
  4. Ability to work well with children and all students
