Job description

Margaret Chase Smith School is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and collaborative special education teacher to join our team in a self-contained Grades 1 & 2 program. This position is ideal for an educator who is passionate about creating a supportive, structured, and inclusive environment for students with a range of learning, behavioral, and developmental needs. MCS serves approximately 375 students in grades PreK-4 in the Sanford area. We proudly offer outstanding specialists in art, music, physical education, health and media/library. While we provide Title I literacy and math, English to Speakers of Other Languages and Gifted and Talented Programs, our staff and students are also supported by coaches and interventionists in literacy and math. We are looking for a trauma-informed team player who loves children and is passionate about teaching and learning. Responsibilities will include:

-Create a positive, predictable classroom environment with clear routines and consistent expectations

-Demonstrate the competence and flexibility necessary to program for students with academic, emotional, and behavioral needs

-Provide individualized and small group instruction aligned with students’ IEP goals in both academic and functional content areas

-Collect and utilize data to inform instruction in all academic areas

-Supervise and manage educational technicians in the special education classroom and during mainstreaming

-Collaborate closely with support staff during referral meetings, related service providers, and general education colleagues

-Experience with de escalation strategies and/or Safety Care

-Maintain ongoing communication with families about student progress and participate in IEP meetings
