Opportunity Summary

Bronx Arts Elementary School seeks a School Social Worker responsible for helping students achieve at high levels academically and socially by directly providing counseling services and connecting appropriate resources to faculty members, students, and students’ families; serving as a liaison to the staff and administration on matters relevant to the social, behavioral, and emotional health of students and the school.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing individual and group counseling to students as required by students’ Individualized Education Plans, and as needed;
  2. Managing, tracking, and documenting student interactions and counseling schedules;
  3. Providing advice and support to teachers in creating curricula and providing instruction that supports the social and emotional health of the students and the school;
  4. Evaluating and re-evaluating short-term behavioral and academic objectives on a regular basis throughout the school year for students with ongoing behavior plans;
  5. Leading discussions among students on issues related to behavior, emotional health, and social skills;
  6. Developing and maintaining consistent communication with families about strategies to support their child at home and school, and the resources available within the school and broader community;
  7. Building relationships with community organizations and outside agencies to provide health, mental health, recreation, and social supports for families and making referrals as necessary;
  8. Serving as a resource for families on issues in the home impacting student success;
  9. Facilitating parent workshops focused on supporting families with mental health;
  10. Maintaining files on students, including session content and progress;
  11. Carrying out other duties as assigned.

  • Participating with the Director of School Culture and Counselor in establishing a school culture that reinforces the school’s mission, goals, and principles throughout the Bronx Arts community.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster a collegial work environment;

  • Belief in arts education, rigorous academics, and inclusion;
  • Ability to set and achieve high goals for student achievement;
  • Ability to involve families as partners;
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Education and Experience:

  • MSW or Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work, School Psychology, or related counseling discipline;
  • LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent certification;
  • NYS Certification in School Social Work or School Psychology;
  • Minimum of three years of experience preferred;
  • Experience working with students in under-resourced communities;
  • Bilingual skills preferred;
  • Knowledge of SESIS platform is a plus.
