The job of Elementary Principal is done for the purpose/s of providing leadership and management to a K-5 elementary school with a primary focus on improving student achievement while maintaining the health and safety of all students and staff. The Principal is responsible for all aspects of the building which include but are not limited to: instruction; curriculum; staff supervision and evaluation; school improvement; staff development; student discipline; record-keeping; public relations; and maintenance of building and grounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees all aspects of the instructional program, school environment and the operational/fiscal health of the school.
  • Supervises, monitors, and coaches staff in the building with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Oversees the professional development of teachers and staff, including regular supervision and evaluations.
  • Make recommendations to the Superintendent for hiring, contract status, re-employment, or termination for all personnel in a manner, which is consistent with district policies and guidelines pertaining to personnel actions.
  • Serving as the Local Education Authority, attend IEP/504 meetings, and assure compliance with governing statutes and regulations. Work cooperatively with the Director of Special Education to assure optimum effective services to children, families, and teachers.
  • Fosters an environment where staff and faculty work cooperatively together and hold each other accountable to reach high levels of student achievement.
  • Manages organizational systems and resources for a safe, high-performing learning environment.
  • Collaborates with families and stakeholders who represent diverse community interests and needs; mobilizes community resources that support and improve teaching and learning.
  • Provides instructional leadership focused on current research and best practices in order to continually increase student achievement.
  • Allocates and coordinates the movement of resources to ensure the health, safety, and productive learning of staff and students.
  • Collaborates with other elementary and district administrators to provide an overall direction for teaching and learning in the school district.
  • Effectively manages school operations in terms of personnel, budgets, buildings and grounds, etc.
  • Promotes a positive tone for collaborative school/community relations by articulating the mission, seeking community support, and fostering rapport with all stakeholders.
  • Confers with parents and staff to discuss educational activities, policies and student behavioral or learning issues.
  • Work cooperatively to arrange professional travel, field trips, etc with the Human Resources Coordinator.
  • Facilitate communication, good relations, and cooperation of the staff with parents in general, and with PTO and other parent-based school support groups as well as with appropriate community-based support groups. Participate in the meetings and activities of parent-based support groups at the school. Generally promote positive school-community relations and communication.
  • Manage the use of the school by community and other non-school groups according to district policies and guidelines.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date attendance, enrollment, discipline, and general cumulative student records according to district policies and guidelines, and cause information from these to be reported in an accurate and timely way when requested by the district, State of Wyoming, or other appropriate agency.
  • Administer normal disciplinary measures in the school. Keep all staff members advised of disciplinary measures. Keep records on all disciplinary measures taken. Recommend to the Superintendent of Schools expulsion of students whenever behavior necessitates.
  • Keep the Superintendent, Board of Trustees, school, and the public informed of the education program in the school.
  • As a member of the District Administrative Team, fully participate in regular administrative meetings and attend school board meetings.
  • Consistently and faithfully apply the policies and guidelines of the District in the administration of the school.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Facilitates and oversees committee meetings as required.
  • Assume leadership responsibility of one or more district-wide programs.
  • Coordinate and supervise after-school events, activities, conferences and meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Supervise and evaluate extra-duty staff in conjunction with department Directors.
  • Work cooperatively with Human Resources Department to assure coverage for absent teachers.
  • Supervise or cause to be supervised all student activities and programs within the school.
  • Develop the school schedule and assign students to teachers and classes.
  • Maintain a coordinated inventory control program for all areas of the school – texts, furniture, equipment and supplies.
  • Attend concerts and student centered events.
  • Act as a liaison to other state and county agencies.
  • Work with the middle school administration and counseling department to assure successful transition of fifth graders to sixth grade.
  • Work cooperatively with other principals to schedule staff who may serve more than one school.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY
  • Proven ability as a leader of adults especially in K-5 environments including modeling effective teaching and leadership practices; articulating a vision for effective instruction; creating learning networks; and inviting critique of own practice and reflecting upon it.
  • Expert in using school performance to drive feedback to teachers including observing and analyzing instructional practice; using data on student, teacher, and school performance to determine underlying causes; and providing differentiated support based on evidence.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to weigh options, think clearly, evaluate accurately, develop a plan and make decisions to facilitate its fulfillment.
  • Ability to make decisions with sound emotional judgment.
  • Understand the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of children.
EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR FORMAL TRAINING
  • Education: Required B.A. or B.S., M.A. or M.S
  • EXPERIENCE: Required: Minimum of three years of teaching – credentialed service.
  • Desirable: Five or more years of teaching and administrative type experiences at the elementary school level.
  • Character, approachability as a leader, personality, and proper social capability to relate effectively with a diverse faculty and student body, and community.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of community groups and organizations.
