FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Building Principal

Employment Terms: 10-Month Full-Time (190 Days)

Grade: D/G4

Position Summary

Performs human support work remediating identified students to enhance the school's literacy program. Works with individual students or small groups, assisting students to reinforce presented material through special efforts and repetitions, preparing and maintaining files and reports, and related work as appropriate. Work is performed under the close supervision of the School Principal.

Essential Functions

• Coordinate assigned teaching duties with the Reading Interventionist/Specialist and classroom teacher to align instructional efforts.
• Prepare lesson outlines and plans for identified students and submit them for review.
• Plan, prepare, and develop teaching aids such as hands‑on manipulatives, reading and writing materials.
• Present subject matter to students using a variety of guided reading and guided writing methods supported by diagnostic data.
• Attend training workshops.
• Assist students individually or in groups with lesson assignments by: reading with children to reinforce literacy needs through remediation; closing readability gaps with individualized instruction and programs; modeling reading and writing strategies; dictating writing exercises; helping children locate and use reference materials; encouraging independent work.
• Assist the Reading Interventionist/Specialist and teachers with routine tasks such as organizing student information in portfolios, gathering resource materials, using student information for planning, and performing any other assigned duties.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

• Minimum of an Associate’s Degree or 48 completed college credits or successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment.
• Experience providing clerical support and working with children.
• Additional qualifications as acceptable to the Board.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
• Regular speaking or hearing; frequent standing, walking, use of hands; repetitive motions; occasional sitting, reaching, and lifting.
• Close vision, distance vision, color perception, peripheral vision.
• Vocal communication for conveying instructions accurately and loudly.
• Hearing to perceive spoken words and fine distinctions.
• Preparing and analyzing written or computer data; visual inspection involving small defects or parts; operating machines and observing surroundings.
• Occasional exposure to outdoor weather and bloodborne pathogens; may require protective equipment.
• Work in a moderately noisy location.

Special Requirements

• Possession or ability to acquire appropriate postgraduate licenses, certificates, or endorsements required by Virginia.
• May require operation of division‑owned or leased motor vehicles; driving record will be reviewed.
• All candidates must pass pre‑employment screenings: tuberculosis, Child Protective Services investigation, State Police criminal history, FBI/National criminal history.
