Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a skilled instrumentation technician to support calibration, automation, and data acquisition efforts across diverse test environments. You will work with engineers and technicians to interpret test plans, build fixtures, and develop automation using MET/CAL and LabVIEW.

The role emphasizes hands-on calibration, troubleshooting, and data handling, with safety and ISO 17025 standards guiding daily activities in lab and machine-shop settings.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology or related field, or five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination.
  • Experience with ISO 17025 required.
  • Strong calibration, automation and data acquisition capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret test plans, procedures, and schematics; determine setup and give feedback to design and engineering.
  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain instrumentation, automation, and data acquisition equipment.
  • Support technicians and engineers by collecting, documenting, and storing test data and automating various test set-ups.
  • Design and fabricate electrical/mechanical test fixtures.
  • Create and utilize programs within MET/CAL and LabVIEW.
  • Operate and troubleshoot a wide variety of audio/visual equipment.
  • Assist in developing calibration and related procedures.
  • Exercise troubleshooting skills and determine corrective actions for abnormal conditions.
  • Collect and reduce operational and test data.
  • Work with other technicians and personnel to meet program requirements.
  • Assist senior instrumentation technicians and/or test engineers with advanced data acquisition and automation projects.
  • Provide guidance to and train lower grades as required.
  • Evaluate, research, and recommend instrumentation, audio/visual, and electrical equipment for procurement; contact vendors and generate purchase requisitions.
  • Provide backup protection with appropriate equipment and PPE during fire testing.
  • Operate forklifts as required.
  • Perform housekeeping duties.
  • Identify and assist in remediation of safety hazards.
  • Maintain a good safety record.
  • Perform all job elements in accordance with established procedures.

Summary

Responsible for working with instrumentation, automation, data acquisition, audio/visual, and electrical equipment to support company activities, as directed. Performs tasks directly or through subordinates.

Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology or related field; or five years of related experience; or an equivalent combination. Experience with ISO 17025 required.

Language Skills

Read and understand written instructions (safety notices, test procedures, operating and maintenance instructions). Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Mathematical Skills

Proficiency in basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Understanding and ability to apply advanced math functions (trigonometry, algebra).

Computer Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Proficiency with MET/CAL and LabVIEW. Ability to type strongly preferred.

Reasoning Ability

Excellent aptitude in calibration, automation, data acquisition, and electrical applications. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, interpret technical instructions, and work in teams. Adaptability.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, and controls; stand, walk, climb stairs, reach; lift or move objects up to 35 lbs; distinguish colors.

Work Environment

Lab and machine‑shop areas with moderate to high pressure gases and liquids, extreme temperatures, high voltages, chemicals, and sharp objects. Moderate noise. Temperature extremes have some control. PPE provided when necessary.

Compensation

$25.00 /hr – $34.00 /hr. Salary determined by education, experience, skills, and market data. Position includes competitive benefits.
