Job summary

Carpenter Co. is seeking an Electronic Technician A / PLC Technician for our Lakeland, FL manufacturing plant on 1st shift.

The role ensures electronic and computer components of plant production equipment are installed, maintained, and operating at optimum levels to meet internal and external customer needs. The ideal candidate has PLC experience (Allen-Bradley and Siemens), strong PC literacy, and the ability to read schematics, work flexible hours, and pass required safety tests.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of electronic field experience in an industrial setting.
  • 2+ years with computer interfacing and PLC programming or schooling.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

  • Advise Maintenance Manager of electrical/mechanical problems and provide solutions.
  • Build, maintain and repair production electronic systems.
  • Retrofit machine control systems and read/modify electrical schematics.
  • Install, repair and retrofit motor controllers and drives.
  • Troubleshoot problems quickly and determine viable solutions daily.
  • Implement preventive maintenance to identify issues before they occur.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and design of electrical circuits.
  • Diagnose, maintain, and install PLC systems and control circuits.
  • Prioritize tasks and adapt to changes throughout the day.

Electronic Technician A / PLC Technician

Immediate opening on 1st shift at our Lakeland, FL manufacturing plant. This position is responsible for ensuring electronic and computer components of plant production equipment are installed, repaired, adequately maintained, and operating at optimum production levels necessary to manufacture products for internal and external customers on a timely basis.

Essential Functions
  • Advise Maintenance Manager of electrical/mechanical problems and provide recommendations for solutions
  • Build, maintain and repair all production electronic systems
  • Retrofit machine control systems, read, modify, and create machinery electrical schematics
  • Install, repair and retrofit motor controllers including all types of motor AC and DC drives and systems
  • Troubleshoot problems quickly and determine viable solutions daily
  • Identify potential problems before they occur through a preventive maintenance program
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, and design of electrical circuits
  • Diagnose, maintain, and install PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems and associated 24VDC, 120VAC control circuits
  • Prioritize tasks and adapt easily to changes throughout the day and week
Skills / Requirements
  • PLC education/experience servicing programmable logic systems (Allen-Bradley 500 and 5000 series and Siemens S7-400 and 1200) – experience preferred
  • High computer literacy with proven ability to maintain machine control systems software and upgrades
  • Knowledge of various types of sensors and relay controls
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and ability to read electrical schematics (US and Euro)
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers, motor controls, and equipment, including troubleshooting and writing or re‑writing programs
  • Strong PC skills and PC networking (Ethernet)
  • Ability to work flexible hours, overtime, and partial weekends
  • Must be certified forklift, genie boom, and scissor lift operator or willing to obtain certification
Education
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree required
  • 4+ years of experience in the electronic field with 2+ years working in an industrial environment and extensive knowledge of computer‑interfacing (advanced electronic training preferred)
  • Two to three years of specialty or technical PLC schooling
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be able to read a tape measure; basic reading, writing, and math skills are required
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including overtime, holidays, weekend, and call‑in with little notice
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Must pass an audiometric and pulmonary test
  • Ability to work at elevated heights
