Job summary

County of Santa Clara is seeking a professional librarian to manage electronic resources and technology. You will administer public and staff web services, update information promptly, design and maintain web pages, and train staff on web-based resources.

The role requires an MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program and at least one year of relevant professional library experience. Travel to alternate locations and a CA driver's license are required.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (or recognized equivalent) from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • At least 1 year of professional library experience related to electronic resources and technology.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations; California driver license required or ability to obtain county authorization.

Responsibilities

  • Administers public and staff web services including the library website and staff intranet.
  • Implements time-sensitive updates to website information and designs/updates web pages.
  • Provides staff training on web services and web-based subscription resources.
  • Maintains the public access catalog and collaborates with staff to troubleshoot electronic resources.
  • Develops and presents statistical reports on use of electronic resources and web environment.
  • Learns and applies new IT developments relevant to library services.
  • Participates in professional organizations and workshops.

Job description

Under general supervision, to perform professional library work related to electronic resources and technology.

  • Administers the public and staff web services, including the library's website and social media as well as the staff resources, including the intranet, shared virtual collaboration spaces, etc.;
  • Implements time-sensitive updates to website information;
  • Designs and/or participates in the design of web pages and performs layout work, linking, and all other tasks required to create, develop, and expand web pages and services;
  • Provides a simplified means for library staff to place content into the web environment with minimum effort and training;
  • Provides staff training on web services and web-based subscription services;
  • Participates in the design and maintenance of the public access catalog;
  • Works with vendors to configure and troubleshoot virtual services;
  • Participates in the maintenance of the RPA (Remote Patron Authentication) system;
  • Identifies, develops, and implements technology-related public equipment, initiatives, programs, and services;
  • Keeps informed of new developments in information technology;
  • Evaluates selected software and hardware products and assesses their feasibility;
  • Participates in evaluating current electronic collections and platforms, such as databases and ebooks, and selecting and deselecting electronic materials;
  • Answers reference questions, both in person and via interactive web-based reference interface and webmaster email;
  • Answers questions from the public and staff regarding functionality of the web environment;
  • Participates in developing or modifying procedures;
  • Develops and presents statistical reports on use of electronic resources and the web environment;
  • Works closely and effectively with technical services staff, systems office staff, and the Graphic Designer;
  • Participates in professional organizations and attends workshops and meetings;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note:

The required knowledge and abilities are attained through possession of a Master's Degree in Library Science or its recognized equivalent from a library school accredited by the American Library Association, and One (1) year of professional library experience related to electronic resources and technology.

Special Requirements
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
Knowledge of:
  • Web design;
  • Current web-related programming languages;
  • Common office software applications such as email, word processing and internet browsers;
  • Library tools, methods and procedures;
  • Integrated library systems;
  • Classification and cataloging systems and principles;
  • Principles and procedures of reference;
  • Principles and techniques of online services selection and evaluation to establish balanced online library collections;
  • Effective training techniques;
  • Digital devices, such as personal computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and eBook readers used by patrons to access library services;
  • Library services, programs, and policies that serve the community.
Ability to:
  • Establish effective and tactful oral communications in English to serve a wide variety of individuals;
  • Advise and instruct patrons and staff in the use of library electronic resources;
  • Analyze community needs and make recommendations to meet those needs;
  • Write effectively in English;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Reason logically to define problems, collect and process data, and reach valid conclusions;
  • Plan and develop events and trainings.
