Job summary

Sumter School District is seeking an Electrician, Non-Exempt, to maintain and repair electrical systems across its facilities. Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrically operated equipment and appliances.
  • Evaluate, repair and modify complex control circuits, motor control centers, starters, variable speed drives, sewer ejector systems, and well pumps.
  • Replace defective wiring, breakers, branch circuit panel boxes, retrofit panels, interior and exterior ballasts for lighting, fuses, and HVAC electrical elements.
  • Install lighting fixtures and power outlets.
  • Install electric circuits to air conditioners.
  • Perform basic surveys to verify the availability of adequate electrical power to operate equipment.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on electrically operated equipment.
  • Install fixtures, outlets, and switches.
  • Read blueprints, plans, and schematic drawings.
  • Follow safety procedures and electrical codes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent plus three years of experience in electrical installation, repair, and maintenance work is required. Overhead service experience preferred. Commercial electrical experience is preferred. (Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.) Such alternatives to the above qualifications the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL

To maintain the physical plant in an excellent operating condition.

JOB DUTIES
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrically operated equipment and appliances.
  • Evaluates, repairs and modifies complex control circuits, motor control centers, starters, variable speed drives, sewer ejector systems, and well pumps.
  • Replaces defective wiring, breakers, branch circuit panel boxes, retrofit panels, interior and exterior ballasts for lighting, fuses, and HVAC electrical elements.
  • Installs lighting fixtures and power outlets.
  • Installs electric circuits to air conditioners.
  • Performs basic surveys to verify the availability of adequate electrical power to operate equipment.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on electrically operated equipment.
  • Installs fixtures, outlets, and switches.
  • Cuts, threads, and bends conduits and raceways, including wire molds.
  • Installs new wiring methods including BX, MC Cable, Greenfield, and Sealtite.
  • Replaces defective wiring.
  • Replaces faulty electrical components such as starters and motor controllers.
  • Repairs equipment.
  • Drives automobiles, vans, and large and small trucks to travel to job sites and to transport tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Lifts and carries tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Climbs ladders to perform electrical work at heights.
  • Bends, stoops, and crawls to perform electrical work in crawl spaces, confined spaces, restricted spaces, and similar areas.
  • Operates a bucket truck to replace exterior lights and to access the upper levels of buildings.
  • Operates a large cargo van.
  • Operates an air hammer, trackhoe, and excavator.
  • Operates a trencher to lay underground wire.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Reads blueprints, plans, and schematic drawings.
  • Follows safety procedures and electrical codes.
  • Responds to assigned work orders.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Maintains a valid S.C. Driver's License.
  • Must be able to work outside for eight (8) hours a day (flexible schedule when required) and lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities designated by the Director of Maintenance and Operations.
STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Physical Requirements: Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, stretching or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
  • Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to subordinates. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.
  • Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of administrative, technical and other documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare various types of reports and documents with the proper format. Has the ability to speak before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or schedule form. Requires the ability to apply influence systems in staff supervision; to learn and understand principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to counsel and teach employees. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages including facility management, building trades, custodial care, etc.
  • Numeric Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
  • Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and specialized equipment; to operate motor vehicles.
  • Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, hand and power tools, measuring devices, etc. Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. The worker may be subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job. Worker may be subject to danger or risk to a moderate degree.
  • Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
TERMS

240 DAYS.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation by the Director of Maintenance.

The District's administrative assignments are discretionary with the Superintendent. In the event of any change in the District's organizational chart, reduction in force, or whenever it is deemed in the best interest of the District, the Superintendent may reassign the Employee. Further, the District reserves the right to make reassignments, upon notice to and consultation with the affected employee, consistent with S.C. Code Ann. 59-24-15, as amended.
