Job description

The City of Caldwell is looking for a Journeyman Electrician to join the team. Individual performs a variety of journey-level skilled duties related to the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of electrical traffic control equipment and systems, lighting systems, electronic hardware and software controls, and communications hardware and software; assists with other departments or on special projects. This position is responsible for the installation, inspection, replacement, ordering, receiving, and inventorying of parts and equipment. The work is performed independently with minimal supervision and considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative with the general guidance and direction of the Electrical Superintendent. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, which may involve adverse weather conditions and related hazards.

  • Performs installation, operation, maintenance, testing, and repair of traffic signal systems, electrical equipment, and control systems.
  • Performs installation, troubleshooting, testing, repair, and calibration of a wide variety of electrical equipment up to 600 volts.
  • Utilizes various electrical tools, hand and hydraulic pipe benders, motorized man lifts in the performance of daily duties.
  • Utilizes “lock out” and “tag out” system to ensure quality of safety while working on projects.
  • Conducts periodic nighttime inspections for street lighting and electrical work.
  • Ensures that hazards and potential problems are repaired properly and promptly or reported to appropriate city personnel.
  • Monitors work activities and creates documents to maintain records of maintenance and repair work performed.
  • Monitors project material usage and makes recommendations for replacement purchases for inventory management.
  • Wires new installations of traffic control equipment including traffic controllers, induction loops, traffic detection cameras, signal indications, pedestrian signal indications, rapid flashing rectangular beacons (RFBs), and high intensity actuated crosswalks (HAWKs).
  • Operates various types of equipment in the completion of field projects, including fork lift, backhoe, truck, line bed, bucket trucks, motorized man-lifts, and other heavy equipment.
  • Supervises and trains others in the installation and repairs of electrical systems according to the currently adopted version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Serves as or assists the electrical inspector in the building department.
  • Designs and completes job estimates for electrical projects.
  • Provides information and demonstrations on how to perform work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Consistently keeps supervisor and relevant team members informed about work progress, current and potential issues, and proactively suggests new or improved solutions to address challenges.
  • Attends approved meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and remains current on the principles, practices, and developments in assigned work areas.
  • Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
  • Respects the opinions of others and maintains a positive and professional working relationship with colleagues, supervisors, and stakeholders.
  • Provides assistance in other departments or on special projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training and/or Experience required:

  • Completion of four (4) years in an Electrical Apprentice Program.
  • Five (5) years’ experience related to design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of commercial electrical systems; and electrical motor control logic maintenance and repair.
  • Preferred, but not required: Level I or II Traffic Signal Field Technician by the International Municipal Signal Association.

Licenses and Certifications required:

  • Possession of a State of Idaho Journeyman Electrician’s license.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Idaho Class A CDL with No Restrictions within nine (9) months of hire date.
  • The position is subject to after hours call back and varying shift hours if work dictates.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical, and drug testing; and random DOT drug testing.
