Job summary

Baltimore County is hiring for an Electrician II in the Solid Waste Management division to perform journeyman level electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work at the recycling facility.

Under supervision, you will diagnose problems, layout projects from blueprints, and install/maintain electrical systems while leading lesser skilled workers. A master or journeyman license is required with valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Possession of a Baltimore County Master General or Master Limited Electrician License or possession of a valid State-wide Master Electrician License or a Maryland Journeyperson Electrician License.
• Registration as a Master Electrician in another jurisdiction within the State for reciprocity may substitute for the required Baltimore County or State-wide License.
• Driver’s license or equivalent may be required for assignment.

Responsibilities

• Electrical maintenance of the Baltimore County recycling facility; facility is a critical infrastructure for Baltimore County.
• Diagnoses electrical problems and determines appropriate repair methods.
• Estimates cost of labor and materials.
• Determines layout of projects and completes projects according to blueprints/schematics.
• Installs/tests/replaces components of electrical circuitry and power distribution systems.
• Tests/repaire/replaces electrical generators, transformers, and UPS.
• Installs/maintains/repaire motors, controls, and other electrical components of equipment.
• Installs/tests/repaire door bells, fire alarm and security systems, thermostats, lighting fixtures, and communications systems.
• Leads and instructs lesser skilled workers.
• Keeps records of time and materials used.
• Adheres to safety procedures and electrical codes.

Job description

Pay Schedule II, Grade H23, Regular Schedule: 40 hours per week. Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Management.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below. Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.

• Installs, tests, and replaces components of electrical circuitry and internal power distribution systems including conduit, wiring, connections, receptacles, breakers, panels, and switches
• Tests, repairs, and replaces or installs electrical generators, transformers, and uninterrupted power systems
• Installs, maintains, and repairs motors, controls, and other electrical components of equipment and appliances including heating, air conditioning, pumping, and solid-state control systems
• Installs, tests, and repairs door bells, buzzers, fire alarm and security systems, thermostats, lighting fixtures, and communications systems
• Lead and instruct lesser skilled workers
• Prepares and keeps records of time and materials used
• Uses tools and equipment of the electrical trade
• Follows and ensures compliance with safety procedures and electrical codes

Examples of Other Duties

• Drives an automobile, light truck, or commercial-weight vehicle to transport workers, tools, or materials between job sites
• May inspect and approve the electrical work of outside contractors performed on County facilities
• Must be energetic and willing to work in a high paced environment
• Performs other related duties as required

Training and Experience:

Possession of a Baltimore County Master General or Master Limited Electrician License or possession of a valid State-wide Master Electrician License or a Maryland Journeyperson Electrician License. (Registration as a Master Electrician in another jurisdiction within the State of Maryland, plus sufficient experience to qualify for Baltimore County reciprocity, may be substituted for the required Baltimore County or State-wide License.)

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver’s license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.) Registration as a Master General or Master Limited Electrician in Baltimore County or Journeyperson Electrician is required at the time of appointment.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Employees in this classification are designated as Emergency/Essential and may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice. Employees are subject to standby duty for after-hours emergencies on a rotating basis.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of tools and equipment. Duties require exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as high voltage electricity and adverse weather. Some duties may require travel between work sites.
