Job summary

Forsyth County in Georgia is seeking a skilled electrician to perform commercial craftsman-level electrical work for county buildings and facilities. You will inspect, repair, and maintain electrical systems, read schematics, and ensure compliance with codes and safety standards.

You will also train and supervise in-house technicians, coordinate with contractors, and respond to work orders and emergencies, maintaining accurate maintenance records and inventory.

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled/semi-skilled electrical work on County buildings, equipment, and facilities.
• Inspects and repairs electrical systems with testing devices and checks for grounds/shorts.
• Replaces wiring and components to meet electrical code standards under supervision.
• Reviews electrical blueprints and schematics.
• Maintains and replaces defective parts such as wiring, outlets, switches, and sensors.
• Performs preventive maintenance and updates wiring as needed.
• Ensures compliance with laws/codes and initiates corrections when necessary.
• Responds to work orders, estimates materials/time, and plans to minimize downtime.
• Monitors inventory levels and procures supplies as needed.
• Operates equipment such as utility trucks, welders, generators, ladders, and tools.
• Maintains cleanliness and safety of workspace and equipment.
• Follows safety procedures and uses protective equipment.
• Maintains records of maintenance activities.
• Uses computer systems to research issues, prepare reports and forms.
• Notifies supervisor of mechanical problems or low inventory and coordinates with others to resolve issues.
• Communicates with supervisor, staff, contractors, vendors, and the public to coordinate work and resolve problems.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of applicable laws/regulations and participates in ongoing training.
• Provides electrical training to co-workers as necessary.
• Monitors and inspects work performed by team members or contractors.
• Evaluates electrical system performance and proposes solutions with Lead Electrician and Maintenance Manager.
• Performs special projects and responds to after-hours calls as needed.

Job description

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled/semi-skilled commercial craftsman-level work involving electrical systems and equipment for County owned buildings and to provide technical support and training to other in-house technicians and contractors.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Duties

• Performs skilled/semi-skilled commercial craftsman-level work involving electrical systems for County buildings, equipment, and related facilities.
• Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical systems by utilizing electrical testing devices and checking switches and wiring for grounds and shorts or loose connections.
• Replaces or repairs existing wiring systems according to electrical code standards and safety regulations under the supervision of a licensed journeyman electrician.
• Reviews electrical blueprints and schematics.
• Repairs and replaces defective electrical parts such as wiring, fuses, outlets, switches, breakers, and sensors.
• Performs preventative maintenance on electrical systems such as servicing, lubricating, rebuilding, and fabricating new circuits, updates the equipment wiring, and replacing parts.
• Maintains tools and equipment and keeps electrical supplies and parts in order.
• Ensures that operation, repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and devices are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
• Responds to work orders or work requests to conduct various installation, repair, or maintenance projects as assigned; calculates/estimates time and material needed to complete projects; plans work activities to minimize down time in offices or other work areas; conducts maintenance inspections of the electrical systems in buildings, equipment, and facilities to identify necessary repairs; reports potentially hazardous or dangerous situations to supervisor; responds to emergency situations.
• Monitors inventory levels of department equipment, tools, chemicals, supplies, and other materials; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; picks up supplies as needed.
• Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with projects and work activities, which may include a utility truck, welder, torch, generator, electrical tools, ladder, or two-way radio.
• Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, and cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
• Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
• Maintains accurate records of equipment maintenance activities.
• Utilizes a computer, word processing software and the intranet to research issues with electrical systems to find solutions and resources. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, work requests, purchase requests, supply requests, maintenance records, diagrams, construction drawings, or other documents.
• Notifies supervisor of situations involving mechanical problems, low inventory levels, or other issues requiring attention.
• Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, community service workers, inmate workers, contractors/subcontractors, utility companies, vendors/suppliers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new methods, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
• Provides electrical training to co-workers as necessary.
• Monitors and inspects electrical work performed by co-workers or contractors.
• Evaluates and advises Lead Electrician and Maintenance Manager on electrical systems and equipment issues and solutions.
• Performs special projects; responds to after-hours calls or emergency situations as needed.
