Requires five years of experience, Maryland journeyman registration, and a valid driver’s license with medical examiner’s certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints and electrical diagrams; interpret codes and standards.
  • Maintain schedules and documentation; perform preventative maintenance to reduce wear and failures.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, tools, and vehicles; operate bucket trucks, lifts, meters, and locators.
  • Respond to emergency electrical issues on a rotating on‑call schedule.
  • Train other personnel as needed.

Job Description:

Performs highly skilled electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work for County facilities and infrastructure. The position ensures reliable electrical service through inspection, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of electrical systems and equipment. Work includes oversight of contractor work performed under a master electrician’s license and occasional training of other personnel. The position operates primarily in field environments and is performed under general supervision.

Essential Job Functions

Performs inspection, diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of electrical systems, circuits, and components in County facilities.

Conducts routine inspections to identify hazards, deficiencies, and code violations. Installs conduit, pulls wire, programs controllers, develops schematics and ladder diagrams, and tests equipment for proper operation.

Maintains machinery and electrical equipment and performs voltage, continuity, and resistance testing.

Reads and interprets blueprints, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and applicable electrical and building codes.

Maintains maintenance schedules and documentation of work performed. Performs preventative maintenance to reduce equipment wear and operational failures.

Maintains inventory of supplies, tools, and assigned vehicles.

Operates specialized equipment including bucket trucks, lifts, meters, and underground cable locators.

Participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to emergency electrical issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Knowledge of –

  • Commercial and industrial electrical systems, components, and installation methods.
  • Electrical materials, tools, equipment, and applicable local, state, and national electrical codes.
  • Electrical testing procedures, troubleshooting practices, and diagnostic techniques.

Ability to –

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams accurately.
  • Install, maintain, test, and repair electrical systems safely and effectively.
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and under varying environmental conditions.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and related documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, contractors, County staff, and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Perform physically demanding skilled trade work in a safe and efficient manner.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

Five (5) years of progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial settings.

Licenses or Certificates:

Registration as a Journeyman Electrician with the State of Maryland.

Valid driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Special Requirements:

Operation of County owned vehicles.

Subject to background investigation.

Physical Demands:

Work requires strenuous physical effort including frequent climbing, standing, bending, and working in confined spaces.

The position requires regular lifting of objects up to 100 pounds, working at heights, and operating heavy and specialized equipment.

The majority of work is performed in field conditions.

Unusual Demands:

The position is subject to rotating on-call duty and emergency response requirements.

Work is frequently performed in outdoor environments and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, dirt, dust, and high-voltage electrical systems.

FLSA Status:

Non-exempt

Compensation Steps:

Pay rate: $28.31 - $32.50 per hour; $51,524 - $59,150 annually

Grade 720, full-time position, 35 hours per week
