DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

Electricians perform journeyman electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment. They receive oral or written assignments from a supervisor, which may include sketches or blueprints, and work independently following accepted trade practices. Electricians in the Bridges/Structures section often collaborate with Bridge Mechanics and may supervise some employees. They troubleshoot and test electrical systems, write reports, follow up on complaints, maintain electrical systems in pump houses and moveable bridges, operate hand and power tools, and operate CDL equipment.

Required Tasks

• Install and repair electrical wiring systems, motors, generators, and other electrical equipment.
• Maintain and repair traffic signals, lighting systems, and related infrastructure.
• Install telephone and computer systems, fire and security alarms, electric locks, and cabling.
• Troubleshoot and test electrical systems to locate malfunctions.
• Make modifications to electrical systems to meet division needs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or equivalent and completion of an Electrician's Apprenticeship or equivalent program.
• License as a Journeyman or Master Electrician from Detroit or a reciprocating municipality.
• Valid State of Michigan Driver's License; submit a copy of your Electrician's License with your application.
• Must obtain a CDL "A" and "N" endorsement within six months; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.
