Job summary

ENGIE North America Inc. is seeking an Electrical Utilities Student Intern to support the University of Iowa campus distribution systems.

You will assist with data collection, studies, and equipment inventories while gaining exposure to utility operations and capital projects. You will work with the onsite distribution team and planning staff, handling assignments with AutoCAD, SEL software, CMMS, and ArcGIS as needed.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Current enrollment at the University of Iowa.
• Interest in electrical power, electric utilities, renewable energy, or power-distribution systems.
• Ability to manage multiple technical or data-related assignments with timelines.
• Willingness to learn engineering software and data-management tools used in utility operations.

Job description

As an Electrical Utilities Student Intern, you will support the team responsible for operating and maintaining the electrical distribution systems serving the University of Iowa campuses. You will complete practical engineering assignments involving medium-voltage cables, switchgear, relays, control networks, metering, substations, tunnels, and vault infrastructure. Your work may include collecting and analyzing data, supporting electrical distribution studies, identifying maintenance needs, developing equipment inventories, and organizing technical information using Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, SEL relay-coordination software, CMMS, or ArcGIS. You will collaborate with Utilities Distribution management, planning staff, and the onsite electrical distribution team while gaining hands‑on exposure to utility operations, maintenance activities, and capital projects

What You’ll Bring

• Current enrollment at the University of Iowa.
• Current pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Academic, project, internship, or demonstrated interest in electrical power, electric utilities, renewable energy, or power‑distribution systems.
• Ability to manage multiple technical or data‑related assignments accurately and within expected timelines.
• Willingness to learn engineering software and data‑management tools used in utility operations, including tools such as AutoCAD, SEL relay‑coordination software, CMMS, or ArcGIS.
• Willingness to participate in office‑based assignments and supervised field activities with the onsite electrical distribution team
• This role requires attendance at the Iowa City worksite on a schedule coordinated around the student's academic commitments.
• The anticipated schedule is fewer than 20 hours per week while classes are in session, with the potential for up to 40 hours per week during school breaks, based on business needs and student availability.
• Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies.
• The position may involve outdoor work and exposure to weather conditions.
• Work may involve standing, walking, balancing, sitting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
• The employee may be required to wear personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, fall‑protection equipment, and respiratory protection, depending on the assignment.
• This position consists of 15% outdoor work, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions.

Compensation

Hourly Range: $22.50-29.50 USD hourly

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
