Job summary

Indiana University Bloomington is seeking a skilled trades technician in Facility Operations to install low voltage wiring, terminate and test copper and fiber-optic cables, and troubleshoot cabling systems on campus in Bloomington, IN.

The role requires reading blueprints, following safety rules, and training apprentices as needed. A high school diploma or GED with journey-level experience or an associate degree with related experience is required, plus a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED with 5+ years of journey-level experience or an Associate's degree with 2 years journey-level experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by IU on hire.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics and work with MS Office tools.
  • Ability to work safely, manage time, and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Install low voltage wiring, terminate and test copper and fiber-optic cables.
  • Install, test, and troubleshoot cabling systems and communications/sound systems.
  • Review drawings, blueprints and construction specifications, and provide documentation for field work.
  • Support apprentice training and assist in measuring work estimates.
  • Be available for emergency callouts and overtime as required.
  • Drive vehicle to project sites when needed.

Department Information

Capital Planning and Facilities(CPF) works to ensure that Indiana University (IU) campuses arebeautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence inteaching, learning, research, and community engagement across theentire university. A unit within CPF, Facility Operations maintains our physical campus to supportresearch, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington.As a unit of Capital Planning and Facilities, Facility Operationsprovides wide-ranging services all with the goal of creating abeautiful, well-functioning campus.

Job Summary
  • Installs pathways and spaces for installation of low voltagewiring. Installs, terminates, and tests wires and cables, bothcopper and fiber-optic. Installs, tests, and troubleshoots cablingsystems. Installs communications and sound distribution systems.Installs prefabricated systems, such as controllers, dimmingsystems, life/safety systems, and energy management systems.
  • Performs testing, analysis, and repair of video, voice, anddata systems.
  • Utilizes tools and equipment in a safe manner as well asfollowing all applicable safety rules and procedures.
  • Reviews and makes applicable recommendations to drawings,blueprints, and construction specifications.
  • Participates in the training of apprentices and/or otherworkers as needed.
  • Orders replacement parts and components as needed.
  • Provides documentation as required for field work andassignments.
  • Assists in providing work estimates on assigned projects.
  • Stays available for emergency callouts and overtime asrequired.
  • Drives vehicle if needed.

EDUCATION/ WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) and 5years of verifiable journey-level experience. OR
  • Associate's degree 2 years of verifiable journey levelexperience.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectivelycommunicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handleequipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remainstationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requiresthe ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The rolerequires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well asfar away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheralspace of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depthperception. The person in this role must be able to perform theessential functions with or without an accommodation.
