Job summary

David Mason + Associates in Chicago offers an internship program supervised by licensed engineers and/or land surveyors. Interns assist with detailed design, prepare plans, specifications, and reports for engineering projects within prescribed time frames and funding parameters.

Under a mentor, interns gain exposure to AutoCAD/Revit, construction drawings, and a range of DMA services including Civil & Structural Engineering, Power & Utilities, Land Surveying and Field Services.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year degree program.
  • Interest in engineering design and plans.
  • Willingness to learn under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with engineering plans utilizing AutoCAD/Revit or similar design platforms.
  • Assists in production of final construction drawings, details, and specifications.
  • Assists with reports and calculations based on assigned project(s).
  • Supports project managers as requested.
  • Observes & participates in client and team meetings.
  • Participates in other DMA services such as Civil & Structural Engineering, Power & Utilities, Land Surveying, Field Services.
  • May perform site investigations and inspections in the field during and post construction.
  • Follows and abides by DMA safety manuals and completes other duties as assigned.

Our Interns work under the supervision and direction of an assigned team including Professionally Licensed engineers and/or Land Surveyors. Interns will support entry level duties of detailed design and other tasks related to the preparation of plans, specifications, reports, and other documents for engineering projects within prescribed time frames and funding parameters by performing the following duties. The purpose of this program is to expose students to the full life cycle of engineering projects, including but not limited to project proposals, initiation, field visits, design functions & day-to-day operations of all services provided by DMA.

Under the direction & supervision of an assigned Mentor, Interns may support the following duties.
  • Assists with engineering plans utilizing AutoCAD/Revit or similar design platforms.
  • Assists in production of final construction drawings, details, and specifications.
  • Assists with reports and calculations based on assigned project(s) including assessments, analysis, opinions of cost and other key components.
  • Assists project managers as requested.
  • Observes & participates in client and meetings.
  • Will learn, observe & participate in other services provided by DMA including, but not limited to Civil & Structural Engineering, Power & Utilities, Land Surveying, Field Services and Pipes Services. Note: Not all services are offered at each DMA office, participation will vary.
  • May perform site investigations and inspections in the field during and post construction.
  • Participates in and conducts research on local regulations based on project location(s)
  • Demonstrates the potential or ability to learn technical efforts as part of the overall design process
  • Follow and abide by the DMA employee and safety manuals
  • Completes other duties as assigned
General Requirements
  • Be detail oriented, versatile, and enthusiastic
  • Ability to take direction and function independently with assigned supervision
  • Participate and become an active part of the project and division team through active listening & open communication
  • Previous Exposure to Microsoft Office Tools (SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, etc.)
  • Maintains time sheet, tracks mileage, and reimbursement documents in compliance with company policies
Bonus Skills
  • Previous exposure to AutoCAD/Revit or comparable software.
  • Previous exposure to Bluebeam or equivalent document management software.
  • Previous exposure to reading and interpreting plans, sketches, and specifications.
  • Previous exposure to Land Surveying and/or time worked on construction sites.
Education & Experience
  • All Interns should be actively enrolled in a 2 or 4-year degree program in a related field of study
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Able to be seated at a standard workstation for 75% or more of workday
  • Able to use desktop, laptop and/or tablet computer and smart phone for 75% or more of workday
  • Work performed with typically be in an office environment with moderate noise level
  • Occasional travel to other offices or vendor/company partner/job site locations may be required
