dbHMS in Chicago is seeking an Engineer Intern - Mechanical for Spring 2027 to support the design of HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Technology systems on renovation and new construction projects.

The role offers a temporary internship with potential reevaluation for continued employment and a hybrid/remote work policy. Ideal candidates are currently enrolled in a 4-year engineering program with a keen interest in mechanical systems and construction documentation.

• Enrolled in a 4-year Engineering program or graduate with less than 1 year of experience (Mechanical, Electrical, and Architectural Engineering preferred).
• Proficiency with Revit BIM software is a plus.

• Assist Senior Engineers with drafting, basic calculations, or other engineering tasks.
• Collaborate with other engineers on assigned engineering tasks.
• Model MEPFP systems and create construction documents in Revit.
• Write engineering reports as directed by Senior Engineers.

Most duties will be performed in an office environment. dbHMS currently operates with both hybrid and remote-only work policies. The remainder of the duties will be performed in a combination of office environment and construction/field environment which will involve trips to projects sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and frequently is required to walk. The work typically requires the use hands to type, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and perform work in the field.

When in the field the employee must be able to climb stairs and endure typical construction site conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.

Position Overview

Engineer Interns provide assistance in the design of engineering systems for building renovations and new construction projects. These include the design of HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Technology systems.

The position is temporary, having a start and end date in the offer. Upon completion of the internship, the position may be reevaluated for continued employment, or for rehire at a later date.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: Enrolled in 4-year Engineering program or be a graduate from a 4-Year Engineering Program with less than one year of experience (Mechanical, Electrical, and Architectural Engineering preferred).

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to operate Revit™ BIM software.
