DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE

The Inspection Department provides professional quality assurance andregulatory support for the Facilities Services Division’s schoolconstruction projects. This support is provided by experienced InspectionDepartment staff with backgrounds in public school construction,architecture, engineering contracting, general construction andspecialized crafts.

BENEFITS

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

An Electrical Inspector inspects electrical installations on new construction, alterations, and improvement and rehabilitation projects for compliance with contract documents, plans, specifications, and State and local codes and regulations.

Typical duties include:

  • Inspecting electrical installations to determine that materials and workmanship comply with plans, specifications, contracts, and applicable codes and regulations.
  • Inspecting light, power, bell, fire alarm, clock, and energy conservation installations.
  • Inspecting outlet boxes, conduits, wires, switchboards, transformers, and cabinets for compliance with specifications and approved material lists.
  • Advising Construction Inspectors of discrepancies between architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans as they apply to the electrical installation and quality of materials and construction.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications of various electrical systems and making recommendations to architects and engineers for improvements.
  • Observing the pulling of major electrical feeder cables.
  • Maintaining a daily log of inspections made and corrections needed and preparing reports as required.
  • Coordinating the work of other specialty inspectors on electrical contracts.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, preferably supplemented with completion of college-level courses in electrical construction or engineering. Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship or trade school program in electrical construction is also preferable.

Experience:
Four years of experience as a journey-level electrician, including three years in the installation or repair of institutional, commercial, or industrial electrical systems.

Special:
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.
Certification by International Code Council as a California Commercial Electrical Inspector is preferable.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge of:

  • The principles and standard practices of civil engineering
  • State and local codes pertaining to civil engineering features of building construction and their application
  • The relationship of civil engineering to the other engineering and architectural features of buildings, including cost and operation comparisons
  • AutoCAD or other recognized major computer-aided design software system
  • Principles of supervision

Furthermore, the ideal candidate will have the ability to:

  • Provide technical review and advice tactfully and effectively
  • Effectively utilize AutoCAD software to create and update civil engineering plans and designs
  • Comprehend complex plans and specifications and edit the work of others
  • Write clear, concise reports and technical descriptions
  • Work effectively with commissioned architects and engineers, District personnel, and representatives of public agencies and utility companies
