Job summary

Los Angeles Unified School District is seeking an Associate Project Engineer I to support the Project Execution Branch in construction and modernization efforts across campuses under a multi-year capital program. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering or construction management.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Construction Manager-in-Training preferred.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Foreign transcript evaluation required for degrees from outside the U.S.
  • Students in last semester may compete; degree verification on the list.

Responsibilities

  • Assist project management staff in analyzing construction engineering issues.
  • Review contractor baseline and monthly progress schedules during pre-construction.
  • Support change orders and cost estimates.
  • Assist closeout staff with DS A standards documentation.
  • Input and process project documents using project management software.
  • Review invoices and contractor payments.
  • Conduct site walks to monitor progress and address inquiries.
  • Coordinate permit requests with public agencies and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Monitor contractor safety practices and SWPPP.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE

The Project Execution Branch of the Facilities Services Division is responsible for the construction of new schools and repair and modernization of existing schools as part of a multi-year bond funded capital improvement program. The branch is dedicated to ensuring that existing campuses are modernized and repaired in support of the education and safety of our students and staff utilizing cost efficient and sustainable materials. Candidates who are selected for the position of Associate Project Engineer I will receive mentoring and job training in school building construction management from top-level LAUSD project managers.

Incumbents will develop a knowledge of LAUSD construction and engineering methods and will be able to perform a range of field and office tasks.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

An Associate Project Engineer I receives on the job training and applies basic knowledge and skills to assist project management staff in analyzing construction engineering issues and ensuring project compliance to District standards. Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating and analyzing contract documents and as-built drawings for soundness of engineering methods, accuracy of calculations, potential constructability issues, and compliance with applicable requirements and District standards
  • Reviewing contractor baseline and monthly progress schedules to identify potential issues during the pre-construction phase
  • Providing support during the negotiation of change orders and cost estimates
  • Providing support to closeout staff by evaluating closeout documents for accuracy and compliance to Divisionof the State Architect (DSA) standards
  • Inputting and processing project related documentation using project management software.
  • Reviewing and processing of invoices including contractor and agency payments.
  • Conducting site walks to monitor construction progress and address contractor inquiries.
  • Coordinating with pertinent public agencies regarding permit requests and approvals.
  • Coordinating stakeholder meetings and preparing and distributing meeting minutes.
  • May monitor compliance of contractor safe work practices and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor's degree, in architecture; civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, or environmental engineering; or construction management.
  • Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate or Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) certificate is preferable.
  • A valid driver's license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.
  • *Candidates who have completed college or university course work at an institution in a country other than the United States, must obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts and degrees. * For the purpose of this selection process: Students currently enrolled in the last semester/quarter of a degree program in the stated fields above may be allowed to compete in the employment assessment. If candidates are successful in the employment assessment, their name will be withheld from the eligibility list pending verification of their conferred degree.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be committed to the field of construction project management and display a willingness to learn established policies, procedures, and methods from others and apply this knowledge in the workplace. He or she will be diligent and detail-oriented in the performance of assigned tasks and will be ready to provide technical assistance to project team members as needed. Possession of a Construction Manager-in-Training certificate is preferred.
