Job summary

Thompson Construction Group, Inc. is seeking an estimator to support the North Charleston office within the Capital Projects and Construction Division.

You will analyze blueprints, specs, proposals, and other docs to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates, and assess material and equipment costs. The role requires a four-year degree in engineering or construction management and experience in electrical, mechanical, civil, or structural steel projects, with strong MS Office skills.

Qualifications

• Four-year degree in engineering or construction management (or equivalent) with relevant experience.
• Experience estimating electrical projects; experience with mechanical, civil, structural steel projects helpful.
• Superior computer skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Self-directed with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong math and analytical skills for cost/pricing of material, labor, and equipment.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines and establish positive relationships.
• Experience with Conest, Accubid and other estimating software.
• Knowledge of bid forms, bid requirements, bonds, minority requirements, general conditions, building permits and site safety.
• Possibility of drug test and background check based on location.

Responsibilities

• Quantify project quantities using on-screen and manual take-off tools.
• Assemble estimates for budgeting and bid submittals.
• Meet with owners and design representatives to review estimates and value engineering.
• Review preliminary plans and architectural drawings.
• Determine material and labor requirements and prepare itemized lists.
• Visit construction sites to note site features and access to infrastructure.
• Include all resources to complete a comprehensive cost estimate.
• Compute cost factors to support planning, bidding, and vendor selection.
• Conduct studies to develop standard hours and cost data.
• Consult with clients and vendors to discuss estimates and resolve issues.
• Maintain supplier/equipment vendor relationships to track pricing and negotiate rates.
• Monitor project profitability and handle changes to estimates.
• Develop cost-monitoring processes for profit tracking.
• Other duties as assigned.
