One of our clients is looking for a talented and highly motivated Electrical Estimator (Substation / HV).
Pay Rate: $110,000 to $130,000/YEAR
Job Requisition: PP0005445
About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Electrical Estimator to support bidding and preconstruction activities for high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical infrastructure projects. This position focuses on developing accurate project cost estimates for substations, transmission systems, utility-scale installations, and related energy infrastructure. The successful candidate will combine strong electrical construction knowledge with hands-on estimating skills to evaluate project scope, labor requirements, material costs, and subcontractor pricing. Experience working with complex utility power projects and independently preparing competitive bid proposals is essential.
Job Duties
- Develop detailed cost estimates and bid proposals for HV/MV substations, transmission and distribution systems, and utility electrical construction projects.
- Review requests for proposals, technical specifications, construction drawings, and contractual scope documents to establish project requirements.
- Perform comprehensive material, equipment, and labor quantity takeoffs for electrical installations.
- Calculate project costs using current labor rates, material pricing, equipment costs, and subcontractor quotations.
- Evaluate construction methods and installation requirements to determine appropriate labor resources and project costs.
- Identify scope gaps, pricing discrepancies, constructability concerns, and potential financial risks before bid submission.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, project management, and field construction teams to validate technical assumptions and estimated costs.
- Support estimates for battery energy storage systems (BESS), gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), renewable energy facilities, and other utility-scale projects as applicable.
- Compare self-performed work against subcontracting options to support cost-effective execution strategies.
- Assess project profitability, evaluate cost-saving opportunities, and contribute to competitive bid pricing.
- Participate in pre-bid discussions, project site visits, and bid review meetings as required.
- Communicate estimate assumptions, exclusions, quantities, and pricing rationale to internal stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain cost databases covering electrical materials, equipment, labor, and subcontractor pricing.
- Monitor changes in market pricing and construction costs to improve estimating accuracy.
- Prepare clear, organized estimating documentation and proposals for submission through applicable client portals.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or a related field; equivalent relevant trade and estimating experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated experience preparing electrical construction estimates and independently developing bid proposals.
- Direct experience estimating HV/MV substations, transmission and distribution systems, or comparable utility power infrastructure projects.
- Hands-on expertise in material takeoffs, labor calculations, equipment pricing, and project cost development.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical construction drawings, blueprints, technical specifications, and RFP packages.
- Practical understanding of electrical construction methods, installation requirements, subcontractor pricing, and project scope evaluation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Visio, Project, and OneDrive.
- Experience with electrical estimating software such as EBM and Accubid is highly relevant.
- Familiarity with online client portals and Oracle Primavera P6 is beneficial.
- Strong analytical, organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with preconstruction, engineering, purchasing, project management, and field construction personnel.
- Experience with BESS, GIS, renewable energy, and utility-scale electrical installations is preferred.
- Ability to attend project meetings and site visits as required.
